Melbourne T2 Check in

Next month I am flying NTL-MEL-LAX-SFO in Y+, with NTL-MEL booked on Jetstar as QF codeshare (single PNR).

JQ lands in Melbourne at 1600 and QF95 departs at 2130.

I know that I need to collect bags in Melbourne and recheck with Qantas.

Will I be about to do that ~1630, or do I need to wait for three hours before, so 1830?

I was hoping to get an uber into the city for some dinner, but if I can’t drop the bags straight away, I’m not going to have a lot of time. I know I can store the bags but I don’t want to be stressing about Melbourne traffic on a Friday night.

I can probably check in for the whole journey at Newcastle (as JQ/QF checkin is the same contractor) so it’s just a matter of bag drop.

That is certainly true for USA flights as you can't OLCI - (bags or no bags to check). With the new rules you need to be "interviewed" before you can get your USA BP.

But since earlier this year, same day bag drop has been available for ex MEL international flights (other than those to the USA).

I might be OK then - QF at Newcastle should be able to do this - you can fly NTL-BNE-LAX all on Qantas metal. We’ll see I guess.

These are contract (non QF) staff who patrol the check-in areas for each USA flight. I doubt this will happen at NTL.

We got our boarding passes in MEL and werent interviewed till we transited in SYD.
