Melbourne restaurants recommendations?

Thanks for all the advice. Have booked at Il Bacaro. I'll report back mid April after the visit.

You won't be disappointed by Il Bacaro. It's a fixture on the scene funded by everyone in 101 Collins. If you change your mind for a tram ride, I would always recommend France Soir just to be happy; and if you want an affordable wine list, City Wine Bar (part of the European) is the place to kick back for a couple of hours.

The only thing I would add to the thread is that there are some great lunch deals in the CBD that anyone reading this thread might want to be aware of. Philippe has one, so does Rosetta. Some are closer to celebration than others...

Edit just saw earlier comment about trams to South Yarra. Perhaps next time someone reads it will be over.

Where are all the Melbourne foodies on this thread?? :)

99% of what has been posted are the tourist traps and same old establishment restaurants that IMHO charge double what they are worth (guess if you aren’t paying it doesn’t matter) - you can get so much better food for half the price and much better atmosphere/service if you jump in a $15 uber and go to one of the cooler inner north or inner east suburbs.

Anyway I’m hoping to see some new recommendations and here are a couple more recently opened:

- Has amazing wine and coughtail list for those inclined as well
- Chef has serious creds if you rate that BG, and the food is amazing

- Incredible coughtails
- A+++ food in a cosy hip space
- Super friendly staff

The Langham has a very nice smorgasbord on the first floor.
Won't bother with Rockpool as that is no good.
Rosetta is still ok.

France Soir in Toorak is a great French bistro - it is our favourite restaurant.

The other place I have enjoyed recently is Philippe - another French restaurant - in the CBD. Their lunch menu is especially good value. The Gentleman and I sometimes have a sneaky lunch there.

Cheap and cheery Viet/Asian fusion newish addition to Victoria Street Richmond.

Friendly owners, largish fresh produce well cooked serves. A main and a drink, can be out of there for less than $20.

This is the best pizza I've had in Melbourne. Worth crossing the river for!

SPQR in the city is also very good.
Only had 400 Gradi in East Brunswick (not their other stores), which is probably just as good as SPQR.

All of the above are Neapolitan style.

Pauly7 of course I act as a tourist when I visit Melbourne as I don’t bother cooking. When I am there I am in Southbank Melbourne so I tend to walk somewhere for dinner.
For French I go further to France Soir or Thierry but do that less often as Melbourne traffic has become pretty nasty.

400 Gradi is very good but I think over priced because they are ‘famous’.

Sub in this new amazing Italian gem much cheaper and cooler. Must book ahead though it’s rammed:

Just for something different myself and couple of my AFF cobbers dined at The Olive Tree last night. Nothing unusual about that as we do it 20 - 50 times a year - but Emilio the owner and head chef certainly outdid himself - the in-house speciality 300gr Wagyu eye fillet at $51 was just SPECTACULAR - a SENSATIONAL cut of meat cooked to PERFECTION - $51 includes the sides so you don't get skun another $15 to $20 right there.

The steak is always great here and keenly priced but last night all 3 of us agreed it was probably the best meat we have ever eaten there - if you have not tried it do yourself a favour and get there - BYO wine also which makes it so much better again.

FTR - I am going back tomorrow night with some Yank visitors who own a feedlot in Kansas and who arrive at 09:30 in morn - i'll show them a steak experience at a fraction of the price they would pay at home - and the BYO wine concept knocks the Yanks socks off.

Kansas has surprisingly good food CE so let us know what those Yanks said.

They were knocked over - 500gr scotch A$41 = US$28 and 500gr porterhouse A$38.50 = US$26 incl sides they could not believe their eyes? But 2 bots champs 2 bots red all BYO really floored them
