Hi all,
Anybody know why international flights from Melbourne Tullamarine is so much more expensive than flying out of Sydney?

It's consistent across all flights, but as an example, MEL to LAX is $1,295 with QAN, but only $765 SYD to LAX, both one way, same date same airline.

This price difference is consistent across all flights.

Seems silly when you can buy a MEL to SYD for $99 one way, but is very inconvenient for Melournians.

Cheers

Not true. Airline pricing depends on a huge number of factors — route, competition, dates, tickets already sold, etc etc. Sometimes they will favour Sydney, but at others times they will not.

Plenty of counter examples:

Is one an A380 and the other a 787?

Welcome to AFF @Idle

Plenty of counter examples:

Not sure if it makes a difference, but you seem to have priced the first leg of a return flight?

Also you and Idle should be pricing it the same way - both off airline web sites or both some aggregator, as your example seems to be. (Not having a shot, just interested to test a comparison where all things are the same.)

No, that is the price of a round trip. It's from Google Flights.

The OP simply isn't looking widely enough. It might be the case for the specific route or time period MEL is more expensive, but it's incorrect to assert 'It's consistent across all flights'.

I have always found RT Fares from all 3 Eastern cities pretty much the same to LAX, I've never seen a time when one was hundreds more compared to the other. Generally was about $10 between the three due airport taxes. However, one way flights are all over the shop generally.

Can you just book a return MEL-LAX-MEL and not bother with the return?
