Melbourne International Checkin

So how do you get from air side departures to air side arrivals? There are official transit doors for the other way.

BD

I've done it (solo) at SYD. A word to the passport control officials with a very good reason and they will escort to back to landslide departures area.

Ok, lets say a person is at MEL QFs Pier A or Pier B, MELd. Airside on the domestic side if you must.
How on earth do you get to airside of MELi (T2) without going past int security and Australian immigration?
Can you open one of those doors, and then step down the staircase, and walk towards T2, and open a stair case door somewhere there at T2?
Yes, I do know its (T1/T2/T3) are all interconnected and can be easily walkable.
My point is how do you get from the dom secure zone, to the int secure zone, ie, prior to going through those dom folding doors with "one way only" on it.
I am surprise that Australian Customs personnel staffing the Australian Immigration counters would let a person go in and out of the int secure zone 4 times a day though.

Pooch, you've got it all wrong (unless I've completely misunderstood!)

crankychick did not touch a Domestic terminal (at SYD). S/he arrived on an International flight (airside), collected bags, went landside and stowed bags (1). She then entered airside to use Lounge (2). Exited airside to landside to collect bags and check them in (3), then went airside again to fly out (4). All in the International Terminal. Ne'er a discrete door between terminals to be seen.

BD

Word of caution for clearing outbound immigration 11 hours before QF9. I've done this and MEL customs got cranky at me for doing so. They grumbled at having to open the flight so I could go through and gave me stern warning that I will not be allowed back landside.

You summed it up more concise than I did. :)

Only international terminal at SYD involved since I arrived from LAX in the morning and was departing to AUH in the evening.

Snowflyer coming in from PER.
Didnt mean Crankychick, Crankychick, yes, she can stay airside for as long as she likes/liked, as it was a transit.
Snowflyer coming in from PER would be a dom flight, and have to go through the sliding automatic doors at MELd that used to have that guard sitting there to get into open public area to use the door to get to T2.

Pooch,

Your original email referred to the 4 passes of the secure zone; your emphasis (bolding and underline) in the post which admittedly also spoke of transiting Melbourne. crankychick is the only person to have referenced the 4 passes of security, nothing to do with snowflyer.

I've had 4 experiences (and will have one more next week) of a domestic to international transfer in Melbourne where the layover has been over 5 hours. The customs guys have had to open the flight, which takes 2 or 3 minutes. Fortunately they've always been exceedingly polite and friendly and actually apologised for the delay. I guess 11 hours is pushing it but sometimes you don't have a choice.

I have had the same experience. But with BP and passport in hand they have no reason to turn you away. It may take a supervisor to open the flight, but it is a straight forward process.

And going back to an earlier post... 11 hours in any Lounge - even the exceptional First Class Terminal of LH in FRA - is a stretch. There must be better things to do in Melbourne than sit in a lounge for 11 hours! I am sure members will have some examples.

Snowyflyer, transit pax luggage is treated differently to others. There is a limited ability in most airports for the storage of transit luggage. This does not extend to pax originating at that airport. It is not a QF service failure, but purely based on airport operation logistics.

Dom or int?
Dom is easy with HLO, if you do QF with a separate booking, SYD - CBR - MEL - SYD, maybe 11 hours will be at a stretch, but not hard with say first flight out, and maybe last flight back.
Int??? Now that one will raise eyelid of our friends in dark blue.
Pity that JQ no longer uses a lot of that domestic passenger on an international flight thing.
SYDi - MELi - SYDd.
Edit: I did try several experiments, QFs booking system will not let more than two sectors in a day (24 hours) in one booking.
ADL - PER - BNE I think cannot be exended more, ie, not BNE - SYD even if it were possible getting the first flight from ADL - PER, and the last flight BNE - SYD. Playing with fire to even try to book the whole stretch in an 18 hour flight period.

I've had SYD first check in make me wait until 3 hours before.

Why doesn't your partner fly to SYD and back then get their luggage checked through on the return? If it's that important.
