I get they are trying to improve the building but it really needs to be demolished and rebuilt. Won’t happen in private hands sadly.

I’m fairly sure the Ansett satellite dishes are still on top of the Virgin gates with the logo also.

The problem isn't that simple. How do you knock down and rebuild an airport while keeping it running... You can't.

So you have to either build a brand new terminal building (possible) and then move everything over after its done or do an expansion whilst keeping current core functionality working.

In this case its kind of a mix of both. They're building a whole new section in extra space they've commandeered. Once its done I suspect everything will funnel over there whilst they renovate the existing area.

I just came back from HK on QF30 - walking off the plane, was faced with a wall of passengers in non-existing queues waiting for kiosks. It was a nightmare. The queue extended back into the main causeway before you actually turn into the kiosk section.

Following aircrew to bypass the queues, I found the front kiosks were also similarly congested.

So I went to the manual customs queues with families and young kids - and got through in about 30 minutes - otherwise I estimate would have been 2 hours or more.

Not sure if this is the right thread to complain about Melbourne International Airport - but it is by far the worst compared to other Australian (and definitely international) airports.

If they got rid of the duty free shops near the kiosks, there would be plenty more space!

Find a spot for them in the baggage hall (similar to the shops in Changi after you pass immigration).
