Hi everyone,

I'm travelling to SFO in a couple of weeks from MEL and have a few options, all with pros and cons.

I will be flying business class Qantas

MEL-SYD-SFO - on an A330
MEL-LAX-SFO - A380

My question is, which is better as I'm not sure if I will be clearing customs as LAX on option 2 and then transferring domestically between terminals (flying American eagle/compass)

Is it worth the pain of LAX for the A380 ride or stick with the refurbished A330 and arrive directly in SFO from Sydney?

#firstworldproblems

Unless something has changed that I'm unaware of, the SYD-SFO flight is operated by a 744, not an A330

If J and little chance of an F upgrade, I'd actually prefer the privacy of the refurb A330. But I didn't know they could operate SYD-SFO??

Yikes, Qantas bookings page says A330, quote from voyager says 747-400.

If it's the 747-400, definitely go via LAX for the A380 right?

Do I clear customs at LAX before transfer to SFO? TSA screening and rubber gloves and all that?

In my half dozen or so experiences LAX is actually fine to transit through. Yes you'll clear immigration and customs in LAX and then re-check your bag for the onward flight before a short walk to your next terminal. No harder than dom-intl in Sydney, in my view.

I'd choose the flight though based on preferred times of departure and arrival, what J seats are available on the two options (use ExpertFlyer or give Qantas a call) and if you want the chance of an upgrade to F.

Is the first leg showing as the A330? As the SYD-SFO should definitely be the 747

A330 doesn't have the range to do SYD-SFO, it would only be the MEL-SYD leg.

I'd go via SYD and fly on the 747 direct into SFO. A domestic connection from MEL-SYD on Qantas would be much more pleasant than LAX-SFO on American Airlines IMHO. And there's a pretty good chance (about 90%) that you'd be on a refurbished 747 with A380 style seats anyway. (If you let us know the exact dates, someone could probably check for you which type of aircraft is scheduled on that flight.)

cannot agree more. Domestic US is a nightmare in comparison to Australia and MEL SYD is such a breeze

This flight is showing as being operated by a refurbished 747 at this stage. :)
