Hi there

Now i have your attention:D

I have noted you can fly Emirates MEL-AKL-SYD on the same day in J for AU$1175 incl tax.

This will earn you 11097 miles in the Skywards program.

4469 base miles
+
70% Promotion for booking in J
+
3500 Promotion for new Skywards members booking in J

Current redemption levels are Y 12500 J 25000 F 37500

Plus you get 3h20 at AKL to enjoy the EK lounge:D as EK will see this a connecting flight and both BP's will be issued in MEL and no NZ immigration is needed or departure tax.

And you get Duty Free

Also works ex BNE & SYD to both BNE & MEL

Cheers

how far does 12500 mile redeption level get you?

SYD-MEL one way + tax + fuel fines + cc fee + booking fee+ phone fee + gst

Hi there

Sorry i forgot to mention that :

The award levels are for MEL/SYD/BNE to AKL or SYD to CHC on EK round trip, not including taxes.

It's not a bad deal - you also probably get limo transfers.

It was better last year when I signed up to skywards though. My first flight had a special fare one way first one way business for under NZ$1000 return including taxes. At the time online booking bonus was 150% and the first flight bonus was also more generous. One trip got me enough points for a free flight in economy, for a fare that wasn't much more than QF economy at the time (admittedly not booked well in advance to get cheapies) AND included limo transfers each end both ways. A bargain.

Be prepared to explain the concept of a mileage run to the Aus Immigration agent upon arrival at MEL  .

There are much worse countries to visit for 3 hours and have to explain to Customs :) You could still be delayed there for several hours if they took offence to your trip and didn't belive your explantion!

Still with the duty free allowance, that works out to be a reasonable deal.

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

You may also need to give some thought as to how'll you'll explain to the SO, if they are not into mileage runs, as to why you'd spend $1175, and a day out of the week taking a flight to SYD via NZ which will earn you almost but not quite enough points to pay for an economy return to Auckland. If you'd done the J to SYD trip on QF and the red e-deal return to Auckland also on QF it would have cost, on my quick look, a good bit less than what you pay.

I guess if the SO queries you, they just do not understand that travel is not about where you are going, but the sort of champers you drink while getting there :D

I wonder if my doctor will give me a compulsive flying disorder letter.....

I did something similar a few years ago....
Turned up at Christchurch Int. and tried to double back to the QC, before going through Customs, as I wasn't actually going anywhere.

Didn't work.....

Got spotted and staff called NZ Police.

Young connie sat me down, and started asking name, rank and serial number.

Explained concept of 'milage run' and duty free shopping spree etc.

"Now Gordon, do you take any medication?"

I looked at him, and thought.... cough, I'm goin' to be 'taken away' to the local luney bin!!!

Took a bit of explaining. Had me thinking.... is it really worth it afterall?

regards,

Well you did get the miles/points/SCs, didn't you. And the duty-free. So absolutely it was worth it  .

Mrs og and I did a Concorde MR back a few years ago. We had great trouble explaining how 2 backpackers were flying on Concorde and didn't want to stay in the LOTFAP any more than necessary to get the same plane back to LHR. Worse still, we couldn't really communicate effectively because we only answered to the question "any more KRUG Sir / Madam?"

But that means flying in EK J which from what I have heard is pretty average. EK F on the other hand (if on the 345) is meant to be top notch although a little tacky - e.g. If you flying F, why would you want to pour your own drinks??
