looking to book award to SCL (and beyond in Sth America with LAN) in J.

Kind of confused about what i am seeing on QF and LA sites for flights and award availability:

  • QF27 is non stop SYD-SCL?
  • QF321 is a code share on LA AKL-SCL?
  • QF site shows avauilavility on QF321 (didn't think awards were made available on codeshares)
  • no availability shows on LA
  • LA site shows availability on some LA806 (QF codeshare) and only one or two LA801 (their own metal)?
  • so it seems both QF and LA are showing award availability on their codeshares with the other but not themselves.

Can someone help with what flights go from where and which award availability I should be believing?

I will be booking and using AAdv.

A couple of other questions:
  • qf metal - is the skybed new gen or old gen?
  • how does the soft and hard product in J compare between QF and LA metal SYD/AKL to SCL?

TIA.

Hi, I've done both the LA and QF flights from SYD to SCL so am hoping I can be of some help.

QF 27/28 is SYD-SCL direct on QF metal.
LA 800/801 is SYD-AKL-SCL on LA metal. All passengers disembark for the 90 minute transit in AKL, then the same aircraft continues to SCL.

J award seats on QF 27/28 are very hard to come by, as this flight carries fairly high paid J passenger loads.
QFF Classic Award seats can be found booked on the QF codeshare travelling LA metal. I have done this before, but again, availability can be difficult. I once got a J award seat on the AKL-SCL-AKL legs and paid the SYD-AKL-SYD component. The benefit of this are that the taxes ex-AKL are much less; it drops into a lower zone in terms of points cost (on QFF anyway); and the SYD-AKL leg can be purchased relatively cheaply in J, earning 80 SC's each way - but drops to 40 SC's as of next week :(

I am not a member of Aadvantage but I don't believe LA awards show up on their online booking engine - perhaps call up?

I prefer the LA (almost flat) seat over the QF product, but the food and service are better on QF.
Hope that helps
