MEL-JFK Qantas(J+Y) or Cathay Pacific(J) ?

So Qantas is kind enough to upgrade me to Business Class. So yeah me and my wife have ended with 2 Business class tickets on
Cathay and Qantas.

What a difficult choice to make now :)

QF is more direct, take that. In terms of pure flying time... by the time you just arrive in HKG (9 hours) + transit - on QF you'll only be a couple hours out of LAX.

I would select CX
- seats more comfortable for taller people
- 2 flights from Perth to NY
- great IFE screens
- HKG lounges

Another vote for CX, it's a no brainer imo.

In fact if time allows I'll always travel via asia to LOTFAP as the business product CX/JL/etc offer outdoes QF in every facet IMHO.

We travel asa couple and we find it so hard to get 2 x J award flights direct from OZ to USA at anytime, but via HKG on CX its a breeze and can miss LAX, great airline, nice comfy seats and lounges in Hong Kong fantastic too. Ok its the long way around but we have a few expat Aussie friends there (HK) and its a fantastic city too. Another J award seat alternative is go via HNL.

Having flown CX on JFK-HKG before in J, i'd rate it as far superior seat wise to QF. The 1-2-1 layout is superior, the seat isn't narrow (I'm a big guy) and I find the CX to be the best J seat in the air that i've flown in (not tried EY, but been on many others).

ex-PER via HKG makes a lot of sense. ex-East Coast, perhaps not so much. I would rather fly MEL-HKG-JFK on CX in J than MEL-LAX-JFK on QF in J. Skybed is an out-of-date product that desperately needs to be retired. 2-2-2 seating is not where the business cabin is at today.

My main gripe about CX is the lack of air vents, and the fact that crew tend to keep the J cabin very hot. A kind word with the CSM often results in the temperature being lowered to something more comfortable though.

HK not a bad place to lounge hop either, my wife is an expert likes to arrive 3 hours before the CX flight :).
