Hello all,

I usually avoid travelling on festive-adjacent days but I find myself flying international early-ish on Boxing Day from MEL this year. Trying to gauge my airport timings - am I likely to find it a ghost town as everyone prepares for day 1 of the test, or is it more likely to be rammed full of travellers?

Although the peak should have passed, you won’t find it a ghost town. Many people are still beginning their summer/northern winter holidays and not all of them are going to the cricket.

Boxing Day was always the traditional start of the driving holidaymakers. Certainly all roads out of Sydney get packed. Presumably some Melbournians do the same?

The worst day to fly ex SYD is Good Friday - so we discovered a few years back. Perhaps because it’s one of the few places you can get a drink on Good Friday! 😂

Domestically the worst day was a week ago - 12 Dec, worst day for international is January 3. Easter Thursday is the busiest for the year by 5K compared to 12 December if domestic only departures are counted.

Although arriving on Good Friday at SYD had me break my record for fastest arrival. From gate to SYD sign outside (with luggage) was 21minutes.

I don't think so. Boxing day lots of people want to get their shoppit in and such. If i were to guess, it won't be a ghost town, but it'd be on the quiet side of busy.
