Hi All

I am travelling to DXB in December from SYD via MEL.

I am currently booked on QF491 from SYD-MEL landing at 2205 and on QF9 from MEL-DXB departing at 2325.

Is this enough time to transit in MEL (even if there is a short delay)? I'm worried that the connection time is not long enough. I was originally booked on QF489 from SYD-MEL which would have allowed an extra 15 mins but was bumped by Qantas to QF491.

Cheers!

I would prefer a longer transit myself, but there's certainly enough time, but a delay would make things tight. It's an easy walk from T1 to T2.

do you think Qantas would try and accommodate if there was a delay?
They frequently delay flights if there’s a small delay. If worried mention it to the FA who will get you off quickly. They make everyone stay seated if there is a delay and get you off first. As long as it’s all on the same booking you should be fine. You could also ring up and see if they’ll change to an earlier flight given they changed it.

Sounds like if it goes to plan it will work no problems but if there is a delay it may be tight!

I suppose I’ll know how it is going to run when waiting in SYD!

Calling up and asking for an earlier flight can't hurt, and neither does asking at check-in at SYD

If QF bumped you off QF489, surely you’d be able to request to be moved onto an earlier flight from SYD without penalty?

This I would be doing! It was not you who moved you from QF489.

Dannee112, if you are not time sensitive would you enjoy a night in an hotel in Melbourne at QF's expense if you missed QF9?

It's complicated though by QF being in league with EK so if that occurred QF might rebook you on the horrid super early morning EK departure from MEL.

I've done it in less at MEL (flight BNE-MEL, MEL-DXB QF9). Had about an hour connection time, landed 20' late due to holding. The airport had already closed the inside walkway to International so we had to race outside and back in (there were a couple others doing the same on my flight). Got pulled up for bomb etc testing, told the person of the situation (he pulled myself, my partner and one other lady trying to make the same flight out of line) and didn't seem too interested about hurrying things along, nor helping us through security again afterwards until we pushed a bit more!
Finally made it just as the last people were boarding (they were about to start calling us over the P.A).
Doing the same thing in a couple weeks time, we had booked with a 90ish min transfer time at MEL. Got bumped by QF to a later flight that gave us a 10min transfer time! A quick call and it was all sorted and we now have a bit over 2hrs in MEL to enjoy the lounge!

PJ747, could you not also have quickly approached the QF check in desk supervisor at MEL (in the check in counters closest to the QFd terminal, hurriedly explained your situation and asked for 'express path' cards to try to get you through immigration a little quicker? Perhaps though with smart gates installed, it may not save a lot of time.

Unflrtunately at the time, our only thought was to get to the gate as quickly as possible! Also, not being familiar with MEL meant it would possibly have taken longer (at the time, not knowing later delays at least) than just going for it!
