When will airlines or someone come up with a measure of legroom?

Seat pitch is not. It's a measure of front of 1 seat to front of seat behind, which then dependd on design & thickness of seat backs which can vary widely. Some lcc's have very thin seat backs & although they might have 29 inch pitch might offer more legroom than similar aircraft with 31 inch pitch but seat backs that are more than 2 inches thicker

Agree. But I don't think airlines have every tried to hide that fact. They've always stated pitch. In some cases they define 'pitch' (same point on one seat to the seat in front or behind), and in other cases they totally ignore the issue of measuring legroom - just saying 'there's lots of it' :(

Seat 'width' is another issue that is totally confusing. Some airlines include only the seat pan, others include a portion of the armrest.
