Meals on Qantas Tokyo Flight

Towel is for your jacksie, which will get wet if you press certain buttons on the toilet control panel.

Area you are staying is right next to Ginza. The big department stores on the main drag in Ginza have great, inexpensive dining on the lower ground floors.

Also not far away is the Odaiba area which has shopping malls with large food courts.

To get there Go to Shimbashi station near your hotel and Catch the elevated train across the Rainbow bridge.

More importantly, Odaiba is home to the incredible TeamLab exhibition which is a must see.

Thanks very much. It doesn't sound like meals will be much of a problem.

That Teamlab looks pretty impressive - especially as it's not far away.

Renato

Since I know I am unlikely to change your mind, at least give MOS Burger a try when you inevitably feel the need to order a burger.
I've just looked up to see what an MOS Burger is - I'll be trying it thanks.
Cheers.

The breakfast place with the token sounds very amusing.
Luckily the hotel is providing breakfast - but I've no idea what to expect. Though I'm hoping omlettes, pork and toast and I'll be happy.
Cheers.
Renato

That was my hotel's breakfast option.

Excellent thanks. I was worried about getting raw fish.
Cheers,
Renato

Sorry for confusion. I meant the vending machine place was my hotel's breakfast option.
Seriously raw fish is amazing in Japan. Absolutely nothing wrong with it. But also there are plenty of not raw fish options. (raw squid, octopus - lol)

You won't get raw fish for breakfast at a Japanese hotel. If you're lucky you may get a piece of cooked fish (mackarel or similar) as part of a set with rice, miso soup and pickles (which is delicious) but most Japanese hotels do a western-style buffet breakfast with scrambled eggs and frankfurts.

That's what we got. Scrambled eggs too runny though.

Interested to hear how the mini bus transfer goes. We always take a train in from the airport. Mostly we stay around Tokyo Station though at the beginning.
The minbus trip was fine - we used Green Tomato. Not much traffic on a Friday night. Just over an hour to the hotel.

As we were going around the subway today, I was extra-pleased I chose the bus. No escalators in most Metro places we went. It would have stuffed us carrying those suitcases up and down stairs - we aren't young anymore.

Renato

When I visited Denny's in Tokyo on the basis that it would be a safe and easy dining experience, I was surprised to find they did not have an English language menu avaiulable and none of the staff spoke English, and I don't speak Japanese.
In our Denny's, the staff spoke three words of English, and when we sat down, they brought us an English menu.

Meal was fine, though it was a bit skimpy on vegetables. $4 for a medium sized glass of Coke No Sugar was a tad pricey though.
Cheers,
Renato

I hope that the Denny's in Tokyo doesn't serve food similar to that in the USA. While I've been to Denny's in the USA, I don't like the thought of travelling to Japan and eating American cuisine.

Local cuisine, only, for me on holidays. :D

Did you order the drink bar with the meal? I believe it's free refills.
Thanks, that would be good - no way to ask or read that anywhere at our Denny's. I'll try it. They gave us glasses of water last night when we sat down, so we didn't order the drinks.

Well, every morning at breakfast I've been making it a point to sample the Japanese dishes before going for the western stuff.

It hasn't worked out too well for me.

Last night at Denny's - where we were the only foreigners among a sea of Japanese - I must say I ate better and more meaty Spaghetti Bolognaise, than I've bought in Australia or in Italy. I was very impressed.

And of course, the hot fried Japanese takeaways at 7/11 and Family Mart are very good. I just wish the hotel restaurant could give me authentic Japanese stuff like that for breakfast.

Renato

Italian pasta and pizza are big in Japan we found. Funny because we were more inclined to bypass these restaurants in the preference to more 'traditional' foods.

Yes, there are so many little eateries with traditional Japanese cuisine. The burgers and pizza can wait.

That’s another thing virtually unique to Japan - you can get a decent hot meal at convenience stores. All of the chains are good in this regard: Family Mart, Lawson, 7/11 etc.

At the other end of the scale, Tokyo has a lot of high end international restaurants providing cuisines such as French all the way to Michelin star levels. There’s also the Kobe beef places with grills on your table.

Most of these places require reservations, so if you do plan to have a meal at one of these upmarket restaurants, talk to the concierge at your hotel. They will make reservations for you.

In which district are you staying?
My daughter and I travelled to Japan last year and absolutely loved it. She navigated with Google maps, downloaded a translate me app which worked fine, our hotel in Tokyo was close to a big department store and all the taxi drivers knew it so no problem getting to it.Japan is possibly the last place in the world you can travel in a Nissan Cedric (the taxis are astonishing, ditto stations and the trains, you could eat off the floor) All the food is marvellous, we went to a Michelin starred ramen one night which only seated about 12, beautiful. Try and fit in a visit to the fish market - even if you don't like sushi it's mind blowing, and if you want to try the world's best sushi there'd be nowhere better. Most of the stations have fabulous little cafes and restaurants ao live dangerously and forget the Dennys. Please

Tokyo has like a thousand ramen places and best susihmi I've ever eaten in some random suburb. Sushi is nothing but it will be amazing compared to most places in Australia. The breakfast place where you had to buy a token for your meal from a vending machine was challenging, but a staff member helped out the dumb gaijin.

Getting away from the food to the hotel.
1. The "hand towel" hanging next to the toilet, is not a hand towel.
2. Make sure you try all the buttons on the toilet seat.
I adore the toilets! They are thousands of dollars here!
