Afternoon all.

So next month I'm looking like heading to ADL (from MEL) for a half-day seminar. My plan was to then head to PER afterwards, alas, there are no flights after 5pm. So plan B is to head to PER early the following morning.

So hear comes the question. If I have luggage I want to check through from MEL to PER without seeing it in ADL (picking it up and re-checking it is not going to be practical), what's the longest I can have between my flight landing in ADL and the next leaving?

Obviously I'd have flights on the same PNR etc...

I think you may be out of luck.

AFAICT connections must be on the same calendar day (at least for domestic connections anyway; few exceptions) to allow "through check".

It wouldn't hurt to give QF a call, but I'm not liking your odds.

Sorry to rain on your parade but in order to through check baggage domestically all flights must be on the same calendar day so in light of that you will have to decide on the lesser or two evils.

a) Collect your bag in ADL ex MEL flight and either put it in a locker at ADL Airport overnight then collect it the next morning prior to checking in or take it with you to your hotel that night.

b) Take carry on luggage only.

It matters not whether both flights are in the same pnr as you can always link the flights for the purpose of through checking luggage to your final destination if your flights are same day.

Why is picking it up then re-checking it not practical?

Cheers

ozbeachbabe: impractical because I'm with four other people for the half day seminar we're running and will have a bunch of gear for that. Fitting that plus some stuff I want to get cross-country on a whim isn't going to happen.

Original plan was to head back to PER to see the family for the weekend seeing as I'm "part way" there already, don't think it's going to work out though (not just luggage reasons either, I'd go carryon only if that was the issue). Would be nice if QF (or anyone for that matter) had an evening flight ADL-PER but oh well.

I suppose the only other thing you could do is send the stuff ahead by AAE from MEL to PER & still fly ADL/PER the next day. You'd have to weight up that cost plus the airfare ADL/PER direct vs the fares ADL/MEL/PER then taking checked luggage on the MEL/PER sector.

Also, are your 4 colleagues relying on your checked baggage allowance to take the "whole bunch of gear" back to MEL?

Nah, my allowance won't be needed for that one.

I looked at the ADL-MEL-PER option... but that defeats the purpose really! Might as well do it the weekend after where I've got more time if I'm coming from MEL again!
