Hello experts,

On short notice, I have to get to London from Canberra. Most likely flying out on Wednesday or Thursday this week and only staying 5 days in total.

I'll by travelling buy myself so have the ability to do something different to maximize SC, Points or getting upgradable tickets.

I'm in the Qantas Club, have just cracked 100,000 points but can borrow some off wife if needed. I'm also going to be within striking distance of reaching Gold before my year is up.

So I'm looking for some ideas to either get:

1. upgradable tickets. I'd like to come home Y+ or J as I'll be back at work asap
2. maximizing SC
3. gaining a few extra points.

Thanks in advance.

1) Fly QANTAS
2) make sure you don't get one flight number the whole way (fly CBR-MEL-SIN, then change to the other flight for SIN-LHR or overnight). This will give maximum SCs).

+1 on making sure you have different flight numbers for MEL/SYD to SIN and SIN-LHR. I learnt this one the hard way by going on QF9 the whole way through.

Very interesting. How much more SC can you gain if MEL-SIN and SIN-LHR are on different flight numbers? Considerably more or just a bit more?

This is a great help, thank you.

Is there any difference between using the Multi City booking engine compared to the normal Return flights booking search in regards to SC and upgradable tickets?

I've checked the Q website and I can change planes at SIN. QF5 to QF9 using the Return flights booking search engine.

If I wanted an upgradable flight home, do I need to pick a Super Saver fare for the return leg?

Thanks again.

A few years back I used to do a lot of domestic flights with Q for work, averaged a return trip each fortnight. I made Gold back then but if I had of known this forum existed I would have made Platinum easy.

I think it is about 60 SCs in J (you can look it up using gc map or mileage monkey if you like).

As you hinted that you'll probably be booking Y tickets, you'll earn 30SCs for MEL-SIN, and 40SCs SIN-LHR - as opposed to 60SCs by only booking MEL-LHR on the one flight number. On a return booking, it's only 20SCs - but not to be sniffed at! :)
