Is there a maximum number of unread posts on AFF, either for the forum overall, or per sub-forum?

Not sure how typical my usage of AFF is, but it's quite common that I won't read anything except my subscribed threads (which I'm receiving e-mails about) for an extended period of time, and then do a big "catch-up" at some point. When I perform said "catch up", I often find that threads / posts inside threads that I definitely have not read are marked as read.

Hence the question - the only two explanations I can think of are that there is an unread-post limit, or that something is broke in the iPhone app causing it mark posts as read when they aren't (I only mention the latter because I have noticed a correlation between iPhone app usage and the not-read-posts-marked-as-read problem, although I think it's just a coincidence).

They "drop off" after 10 days.

That is, in effect threads that have not been posted to for more than ten days will no longer show on the default "unread posts" search.

They also won't show as "unread" in general browsing.

(it's actually to the minute [or 240 hours])

Thanks for the info.

Does that mean that posts are automatically considered "read" after 10 days? Or is what you posted specifically related to an "unread posts" search (not even entirely sure what that refers to :)).

I don't think you mean the former, in which case I don't think that's what I'm seeing. Let me give an example - assume I'm using the iPhone app here, as that's typically what I'm using when "catching up":

1) I open the app

2) I select "Forum" from the bottom-of-app menu

3) I go into a random sub-forum (behaviour I'm seeing is the same regardless of sub-forum) which I've previously read / marked all posts as read in.

4) I see a whole bunch of posts, many of which have a blue background behind the post-count, indicating unread posts in the thread, and of course many more of which have a white background behind the post-count, indicating unread posts in the thread.

This is where things go "wrong" - the indication (and what the AFF software thinks is the case) of which posts I've actually read or not is wrong, being like it's automatically assumed I've read a bunch of posts that I haven't.

Hence, if it's been a long enough time between "catch-ups", I can find whole threads which are indicated as having no unread posts, but which in reality I have never read (at all). If I select one of these, I get jumped straight to the last post (normal behaviour if you've actually read all the posts in the thread). More commonly, I select a thread I have read before and the app is correctly indicating contains unread - however, rather than being jumped to the first post after the last one I actually read, I'm jumped to an even later post (could be the next, could be 100 later, all depends on which post AFF has "decided" I read up to, regardless of the reality). This can occur in threads where the most recent post was 1 minute ago, or 4 weeks ago (referencing back to what you said about threads without a new post in 10 days dropping off the an "unread threads" search).

Hopefully that all makes sense?

They also won't show as "unread" in general browsing after 240 hours of no posts.

I assume you mean whole threads? Fair enough, but then what about:

(sorry, not trying to be difficult here, just trying to understand whether I'm misunderstanding you, or if something else is in play)

If you have been away for 12 days and you have already some posts in the thread and you click on "First Post" then you will get to the last "unread" post 10 days ago so in effect you lose 2 days worth of posts.

Right, so it's the posts themselves which are auto-marked-as-read after 10 days. That explains it.

Thanks for your help JohnK and sertfy.
