I've just made a Lifemiles redemption AMS-VIE-BKK-PER, with the AMS-VIE-BKK legs on Austrian Airlines.

I've just gone to the Austrian Airlines website to select seats for me and Mr Glider, and was able to bring up the booking and start the seat selection process. But on the first leg there was only one seat available for selection and the rest were occupied. So I got a seat, but there were none left for me to choose for Mr Glider. Incidentally once I exited from that process it didn't proceed to the VIE-AMS legs to select seats there, and the manage my booking page no longer shows a seat selection link. Check-my-trip shows that one seat on the first leg I selected for myself, but no other seating info.

I intend to ring Austrian on their Melbourne line on Monday morning, but I wondered in the meantime if anyone else had come across this before? Is the lack of an available seat to select on a ticketed flight something to panic about, might this be an indication of trouble brewing ahead? I actually don't terribly mind getting bumped to economy on the first leg as it's only 1.5 hours in what is essentially economy anyway, I just don't want to have it bugger up the whole booking.

I have had the problem, that when selecting 2 seats in J on OS, the seat selection would only show a seat either side of the aisle. So instead of 2A/C you could only select 2C/D. All others seats were blocked. Has happened twice, and I just send them an email and it is sorted out by the time I wake up next day.

Thanks, though my situation is a little different. You had two seats available to choose, for me there was only one. As in, two people would be turning up with tickets but there were not two seats for their bums sit on, regardless of proximity to each other.

Anyways, I was was stressing a bit about it so rang Austrian directly on their international line, the lady was very pleasant and was able to select the seats without mention of any issue, and the phonecall was done in about 3 minutes. So all's well that ends well.

Good that it turned out ok.

No available seats on a seat map can look a bit scary but it's usually nothing to worry about unless departure is imminent and on line check-in has opened. If check-in has started that can signal a problem. There are usually blocked seats however (for bassinets, high-status pax, those with restricted mobility etc) and those will be available for allocation before departure.

The main exception I think is for UA based carriers. If seats maps show 'full' there, you may have a problem. Especially if you end up in the situation where you are issued a boarding pass without seat assignment. Not pleasant to have to wait and find out if a seat becomes available. Sometimes they don't :(
