Man uses fake boarding passes to scam airlines

So he submitted false boarding passes to the airlines to claim missing mileage? And this is why that’s such a stupid idea for everyday people to do that :p

So this guy presumably submitted the fake BP's to the frequent flyer centre and claimed that he travelled on the flights and was thus entitled to the miles.
Which means that the airlines did not actually cross check the BP's submitted against passenger manifests or similar?
If that is how it worked then I am stunned that an airline wouldn't have such cross checks in place.
(of course I am assuming that is how it was done, and I am willing to admit that I am wrong if required)

Let alone 5.6 million miles... That is a huge number of scammed flights.

One does wonder where the checks and balances were. Still, he finally got caught. But was he caught by chance (eg customs suspicious of him, had bag searched on arrival and they wondered what he was doing with X blank/filled out boarding passes?), or did an airline make a complaint?

You would be surprised sometimes at what some airlines will swallow up, then simply give you the flight credit.

Reminds me of a journalist who tried out a whole bunch of merchants in BNE in various credit card transactions, signing his name very differently each time and seeing how many merchants checked to see if the signature on the card matched that on the merchant slip. Not too surprisingly, the journalist got away with signing false signatures (a few even looking like illustrations / cartoons more than a signature) more often than not.

My perverse sense of humor says "bring it on, pity you got caught - bummer!"
