Malaysia Airlines to join Oneworld alliance

I am hoping someone can help, I have booked 2 J class tickets to LHR next Feb return and have used my Velocity Numers on the booking for points, if MA does join One World am I able to then scrap the V numbers and use my QFF number instead? I also hold MA membership and not sure of the best way to go with this. Is it just a case of ringing Malaysian Airlines and changing the numbers. Any help appreciated

I'm no expert but I'd say that the membership registered with the booking could be changed right up until the time you present at the checkin desk? It only becomes locked in stone once the flight is done & dusted. Some airlines simply have this as one of several changeable options in the "manage my booking" page online. Maybe delete any for now and add the preferred on in a bit closer to the date?

There are many more learned folk on here than I though so I stand to be corrected. (obviously QF will be a moot point if they are not formally allied with MH by then)

Critics of OW, generally point out the holes in their global network. In the past few years, OW have done well to plug those holes:

Central Europe: Air Berlin
Russia: S7
India: Kingfisher
Middle East: Royal Jordanian (albeit limited coverage)

And now SE ASIA with MH. So if OW manages to retain LATAM, that would only leave mainland China, with Africa as a nice to have. A very strong alliance IMO.

So for those like me that are OW/QF fans or at least bound, happy days ahead. Looking forward to a visit ot KL and Traders Hotel sooner than later :p

Isn't it cheaper to redeem on SQ? Amex allows transfer of points to KF at rate of 1:1 whereas for Enrich it is 2 miles to 3 MR points. So on rough calculation, 19500 miles on Y equates to 29250 MR points.

It depends on the credit card you have, from Altitude the transfer rate to KF & Enrich are identical. So Enrich requires less.

From Amex 4MR = 3 Enrich. So for 19500 in Y it is 26000 MR points, which is marginally more than the 23,375 on SQ.

oneworld will have you believe that they have African coverage with Comair.

Also MH fans like myself! :D
I've not flown them for yonks as they're not part of any alliance, now (or at least in 18 months' time) I have no excuse!

QFF/OneWorld has been enhanced certainly by the MH announcement. But Velocity/Krisflyer are much more enhanced. This is a win for both alliances, it is just that Qantas has just lost their monopoly - so the net gain is a very, very big win to Mr Borghetti.

In the last 2 months, Virgin Australia has done something that is truly wonderful - they have introduced genuine competition. Devotees (passengers) of both Qantas, Virgin and SQ will all benefit. Happy days for us all.

Just got wind of the VA/SQ partnership. Agree, both VA and QF camps are raising their games, and competion is hotting up. QF now has to earn loyalty with VA enhanced offerings now giving us options galore. Mon, Tue, Wed Happy days....

Very excited about this! I go to Malaysia every chance I get, and tend to use MH for my intra asia flights where practical.

Take that, DJ :)

just take all your cards with you to check-in desk Noreen. i'm sure they will be able to adjust onsite at that time. i have friends who only present their membership cards on check-in and it all works ok. it will be just a matter of which one works the best for you at the time. (sorry about the itallics. don't know which button i pressed to do that)

Another side benefit of this, unless there are some changes, it looks like QF awards will be an option again for those who didn't want to and don't want to "direct sweep" their credit cards spend to QFF.

Currently there is no way to redeem points on QF - other than using points to buy commercial flights @ 10,000 pts = $100 (or whatever), or filtering through a third party such as SPG to AA. This deal should open Amex MR and Westpac Altitude to QF redemptions, but are there any others?

Any addition to OW is good news.
What I like is that I believe MH has a twice weekly CPT-EZE flight.Makes a southern hemisphere DONE3 feasible.

that's seriously good news...

In saying that why wasn't a DONE3 allowed if you went from JFK somewhere directly into Asia... surely there's some AA flight from JFK that goes into the middle east? no? hmm...

There's an AA flight that goes from ORD to India across the Atlantic. But booking that flight automatically adds an additional continent into your itinerary even if at no point does the flight involve any tech stops along the way. Similar to the QF/BA flights between Oz and Europe but at least these physically stop in Asia!

Looks very good for OW, and I see at about the same time as they should become full members, they'll also get their first A380's, so I wonder if that'll add another great way of getting to Europe... despite the fact their seat numbers for the A380 are not very premium focused. I think I read over 400 in Y!!

Might have to visit Malaysia again in 2012 onwards, certainly beats Bali.

Not so long ago there was a rumour about QF starting up a new airline in Malaysia as part of their strategic review. Maybe the whispers were actually about this upcoming announcement, and the rumour mill was a bit off target.

Interesting indeed, though I wonder if JQ Asia might like to relocate...?

Re: Malaysian Airlines to join OW, sponsored by QF

Wonder what will happen with the DJ / Malaysian agreement? Does this pull some of the fire out of DJ's international partnership arrangements?

The DJ/MH tieup most likely ends just as MH will join oneworld.

Anytime access for Platinum. What a great idea to keep your loyal customers :)

Exciting move. Hopefully the cheap MH J deals stay around for QF status opportunities.

It was published a couple of days ago, but ABT is quoting Stephanie Tully (at Qantas: no shared MAS frequent flyer points or lounges until 2012 - Flights | hotels | frequent flyer | business class - Australian Business Traveller):

Qantas intends to begin frequent flyer point sharing and reciprocal lounge access with Malaysia Airlines ahead of MAS' official entry into oneworld, but it's unlikely to happen this year.

<snip>

"Qantas is sponsoring Malaysian into oneworld so we will probably be the first airline to have the agreement with them, but there is still quite a bit of work to be done. I think 12 months is a realistic timeframe for that."

I would love it if MAS keeps their lounges in Australia but it wouldn't surprise me if they gave up their loung and moved into the QF one. Mind you, SQ kept their lounge when they could have shunted their passengers into the NZ lounge...

The MH lounge at MEL is seriously underwhelming; I think they'd be doing their pax a massive favour by using the QF lounges instead..
