Gee it'd be great to see QF pick them up.

List circa $350m, bought ~3 years ago (presumably somewhere in the ~$180m region), wonder what they are worth now?

What's the history of the second hand A380 market, and are these the extended range versions? 1 extra A380 for QF would resolve a lot of their reliability issues. 2 would allow a restoration of SYD HKG service.

I dont think 1 has ever been sold 2nd hand. I reckon QF would be able to get it v cheap- theres not much of a market even for new ones now!

Re: A380 Fleet Up for Sale

Looks like MH long haul aspirations are less than zero. Local infra Asia carrier is their market from now on. Glad I got rid of my enrich points before the enhancements. The in laws leave in 10 days for CDG. It cleared out my enrich account but the brownie points are invaluable !!!

Re: A380 Fleet Up for Sale

Should be a pretty good price for anyone interested in a few A380s. In the SQ forum, there's been a thread complaining about the lack of A380s to MEL after they were put into service on routes to China and India, so this could be way to get them back to MEL if SQ is interested.

In a way, I wonder if MH will sort of go the way of QF in retaining one or two token/prestige long haul routes to Europe and then focusing on domestic and regional routes. Presumably they'd keep flying to London because of the BA/OneWorld link + prestige.

Out of curiosity, are the loads to/from AMS good and is it mainly passengers from Indonesia connecting in KUL?

It's a shame, but they need to do something to stop the haemorrhage of money. If it means a smaller but viable MAS then it's a good thing. Book via OW partners though. In terms of value, it seems Enrich is all done.

LOL, I did exactly the same with mine, 2 x return J to LHR. Invaluable brownie points and a gold star!

Re: A380 Fleet Up for Sale

Always the possibility Malaysia Airlines never recover. Fickle business.

I doubt QF would want to pick up the MH 380s unless they were free. The cost of reconfiguring the aircraft makes buying them an unattractive proposition. It will be very interesting to see what happens with the second hand market for 380s when EK start offloading theirs back to the leasing companies in a couple years.

Glad I got my MH A380 flight in earlier this month. I really liked the toilet on the front of the upper deck for the J cabin. Instead of having a lounge, MH have put toilets into the areas on either side of the forward stairs. They are massive, real luxury for getting changed and such.

Would QF really buy second hand off MH again?

Weren't two of the ugly sisters from MH, and did they not have metal fatigue issues?

I did the same for mine and cleared the rest of my points out for myself and the OH.

Agree value has gone. The only thing going for Enrich points is the ongoing good reward availability (not available to OW partners) in premium cabins. The news of potential A380 sell-offs means that even those would be a gamble

You have to remember the ugly sisters were nearly 10 years old when they were bought whereas these are as young as three. And while they might have caused issues they still lasted 15 years or more in the fleet so can't have been too bad.

Saw this on AusBT, by way of Facebook.

Malaysia Airlines puts its entire Airbus A380 fleet up for sale - Australian Business Traveller

Considering Qantas and Malaysia Airlines both use RR-engines, this could be an attractive purchase to Qantas, for the right price. Their existing delayed orders are far enough away, and though I'd rather see something a little smaller, they do seem to be having issues with the size of their fleet when one plane is out of action.

I think QF uses higher thrust versions of the RR Trents on the MH 380 presumably because of the ultra long haul requirements.

Despite the articles, MH have not said that they are selling. Sounds like a fluff article fueling speculation and fantasy.
