Maintaining Gold - how the heck do they expect me to take 49 flights in a year?

I just checked my statement after returning from a J return to West Africa from Brisbane, my second in a few months. This trip allowed me to reach Gold. My account summary duly states that I need no more Tier Miles to renew Gold after Apr15, but that I need 49 flights to make it!!!

Quote:
You require 0 additional Tier Miles by 30 April 2015 to renew Gold (includes future bookings*).
You need to take 49 additional qualifying flight(s) by 30 April 2015 to renew Gold.

Does this really mean what it reads? If so, I'll need to do a flight on Emirates once every week for the next year. Surely this calculation from Emirates is a mistake?

To qualify with EK it is either, either tier miles or flights. You have, as most of us in Australia do, qualify on tier miles, and wouldn't worry about the flights.

But yes they could word it better for when you do qualify until the end of the month.

You will see it reads better at the start of next month.

You should have an email soon enough asking you to log in to confirm your shipping address for them to send you out your Gold pack.

Thanks for the reply. I was assuming it was like Virgin where a certain number of eligible sectors must be flown AS WELL as getting the required status credits.

Yes - I have got the e-mail about the Gold pack. I didn't quote the last line in my Emirates status report which was that I only needed 17,172 more miles by end of this year for Platinum after my next trip, already booked, back to Africa. With a bit of luck, I'll get there, which will be the first time for me on any FF scheme. I missed out on Platinum by 20 SC a few years ago with Qantas, and with a flight booked for the week after my review date which would have got me over the line. I phoned them, saying I heard there was some flexibility, but was told that was "in the old days" and now the rules had to be met :( .

EK from my understanding only credit tier miles for flights on an EK booking. Cannot see or know of any other way to get an EK tier mile.

QF, VA, etal all allow tier miles from flights booked and made on partner airlines to credit, why they have the 4 or so qualifying flights on their own metal to require some flighting to happen on their own metal.
