price.. status.
its a small town.
all the resorts on the cotai side are pretty new

Just had a quick google - seems like Sofitel is available for a bit under A$200, the Westin for even less. Sofitel is in the old Macau, Westin is a resort on Cotai. Prices seem reasonable which is encouraging. Any recommendations?

Tempted by the Westin to get golf course access. Has anyone played there?

We stayed at the Westin about 18 months ago.didn't play golf but checked out the course-very convenient to the westin. It is an old style resort and easy to critiscise but we loved it.Great staff.Away from the bright lights and loud noises. On the beach, good restaurants a short walk away.Shuttle bus to the casinos and ferry.Once at the casino area or at the ferry we just used other casino busses for free transport.
Of course I was SPG plat.We did get a suite upgrade and free breakfast.I think this last is also available for golds.

Good to hear that there are good restaurants nearby - a range of Macanese/Portuguese/Cantonese I gather?

Do I need to organse the shuttle from the ferry terminal or is it a regular thing? Also what about shuttles into town (i.e. Senado Square area)?

I also have SPG Gold but never really used it. Do I ask for the SPG Gold benefit on check in or on the phone when booking?

I also have Accor Platinum - wondering if the Westin (SPG) or Sofitel (Accor) will give me more benefits?

I've stayed at The Venetian Macao a couple of times but when it first opened. All rooms are suites so you get a separate living area and the bedroom. Back then it was the only resort on the newly reclaimed land area but I believe there are more resorts/casinos nearby.

There is an episode on Megastructures about The Venetian Macao and they way it was built ie. its on reclaimed land, built on top of huge metal sticks as the top soil layers are way too soft, so the sticks go a few hundred metres to the solid earth below. Amazing!

Visited a few of the casinos on a day trip today. Venetian is looking a little tired, Wynn still looks fantastic. Can't speak for the rooms, but I presume the same holds true. Similar to Vegas really - the Venetian is showing its age there too.

Venetian is also a fair way from the ferry terminal, Grand Lisboa, MGM, Wynn etc...

Cheers
Febs.

I've stayed at Crown Towers which was brilliant - better than Crown Melbourne.

Of the complex there the Hard Rock has the best pool - they are all on the same level above the shared casino, but the pools themselves are not shared

I'm thinking about ~24 hours in Macau (arrive Sat arvo, leave Sun arvo). Thinking about Cotai Strip hotels, but open for suggestions ...

You should be able to get Westin for A$99/night and upgraded to a suite if you have SPG status.

Hard rock Cotai was great when we stayed! Good price - booked the corner suite for $250 a night

Good service and great vibe.

Can't see prices that low for the date I want (not too surprising as it's a Saturday night). Don't credit to SPG so would be a waste really. At the moment I've booked the Holiday Inn on Cotai, but booking is flexible and I'm continuing to look around.

Not sure "Hard Rock" would be my kind of place...

Anyways, thanks for the suggestions. (Hopefully won't be spending too much time in my hotel!)

FWIW.

I stayed at the Galaxy Macau, booked via lastminute or wotif IIRC. ~$100 AUD a night for a really decent room it seemed. At check-in, requested a larger/longer bed (as I am 6'2") and was upgraded to a suite (this worked in Hong Kong too!).

The interior of the multiple foyers and the stage shows on the weekends are fantastic. As are the resort pools, one with the largest rooftop wave pool in the world... albeit only on the roof of the casino floor. The casinos only accept Hong Kong Dollars also, which was a little weird, considering the ATMs on premises give you Macau dollars which you are then forced to change. So take a fair wad of HKD with you when you go.

Location doesn't really matter as you won't do much walking. These resorts really are all-encompassing, self-contained complexes, so that you don't have any reason to leave other than to see some of the old Portuguese architecture. All of the name brand resorts and casinos have shuttle buses that meet the ferries at the wharf.

Ah yes, the free private pseudo-public transport on Macau thanks to the casinos is a wonder!

On ATMs, when I was there they offered the option of HKD or MOP. I think some casinos also take MOP, but not many - I think Golden Sands was the place where I spent some MOP on the blackjack tables.

Holiday Inn Contai currently has an opening sale - rates from about $A120 upwards. Mine is closer to $200, but again it's because it's a Saturday.

Has anyone stayed at the Mandarin Oriental in Macau? I'm thinking of booking using my Platinum Amex FHR benefits and pull the 'its my birthday' card as I will be checking out on the morning of my birthday...

I don't gamble so am not so keen on a crazy big, bustling casino-hotel and this seems to be a good option.

Any thoughts?

Any recommendations - especially for a last minute booking?

Never stayed there but I used to live in the apartment block next to it, great balcony views onto the hotel and the Sands.
