Luggage checked thru at LA?

Am flying VAust Syd to LA, 4 hour wait then VAmerica to JFK. Is it possible to get my baggage 'checked thru' at LA by using the two Virgin airlines?

Even if they will "tag" your bag to JFK, you will still need to collect it on arrival at LAX in order to complete US customs formalities, which must be undertaken at he first point of entry to the USA (LAX in your case). So it makes little difference if they are through-checked or not.
