About to hit the US with the following situation and after some expert advice:
QF WP status, Economy flights MEL-SFO-SAN
MEL-SFO is QF, SFO-SAN is UA, different PNRs but same e-ticket
I know I have to collect luggage and re-check in SFO
Question is: What will my luggage allowance be on UA? Reason is: Will have golf clubs!
Thanks in advance for your help.

Interesting! I would hope the bags will be checked/tagged all the way.... allowing you to use the baggage drop after Customs.... and further hope THAT would mean you don't need to worry! Im sure someone knowledgable will be along shortly....

Note for USA and Canada: Under USA and Canadian regulations, if your ultimate ticketed origin or destination is within the USA or Canada, the airline whose flight number appears for the first flight on your ticket will determine whether its baggage rules or another airline's baggage rules will apply to all the flights in your itinerary. For travel between Australia and the USA, usually (but not always) Qantas' baggage rules will apply. However, please note that any additional allowance for Qantas Frequent Flyers or Qantas Club members applies only to the flights specified.

I suspect you won't have issues on the way out, but you may have issues on the way back if trying to check through ex SAN..

I just checked the "Included baggage" link in my booking and it says 2x23kg for checked luggage on the UA leg so should be fine (from memory the clubs are about 12kg). My only concern now is if they create an issue with the clubs being oversize luggage. They are in a special travel bag which is a narrower version of a full size bag and in fact is actually smaller than a lot of people's bags, just longer, thinner and lighter!
BTW, sbor90, my return journey SAN-LAX-MEL is AA then QF so should have no problems getting them back.
