Theoretically if you purchased a domestic J fare, let’s say for QF or VA could you gain lounge access then cancel the booking for a full refund.

Would it make a difference if you checked in or not?

Would you even need to check in to get access to lounge?

Can you cancel a J booking after check in for a full refund?

You need a boarding pass to get in. You need to check in to get a boarding pass. I don't think you can cancel online after checking in so you'll need to speak to someone to cancel your check in. Too much effort in my opinion for a drink and a sandwich.

You could probably do it once or twice if you had a good reason - my spouse was just run over by a bus sort of thing - but how long would it take before you got spotted as a freeloader?

I remember, though, the good old days of Anytime Access. As a Silver Service cabbie I'd often get an airport pickup call and I'd go to the lounge in my cabbie uniform, have a coffee and snack while waiting for the flight to come in, and then meet my passenger, sometimes right at the gate.

Mind you, I was flying enough to earn the WP status out of my own pocket.

You can un-check in online now with QF, so that solves that.

I'm sure there's plenty of legitimate occasions where people have been in the lounge only to find out their interstate meeting has been cancelled. It's not that out of the ordinary. You just need to make sure the fare conditions allow.

Just don't make a habit of it.
