Has anyone recently flown out of brisbane on Qatar and can comment on the lounge situation? Are they providing vouchers if lounge access isn’t available? Thanks!

I have the same question!

If nobody knows before then, I guess I'll find out in May and share back. 😅

I saw that you called Qatar and no lounge access, hopefully they have vouchers on offer! I am flying May 4th so will find out in a few weeks I guess.

I can confirm. Due to closure of QF INTL lounge and no other oneworld int'l lounges in Perth, Qatar business passengers with lounge access are being directed to Air NZ lounge (Star Alliance)! :)Flew out a few days ago.

Though I noticed a few business passengers who checked in with me were turned away from the lounge. Not sure if they only hold upgraded tix.

Well, QF seems to have updated their website to list explicit times now for the Brisbane lounge. It’s not good news though.

Monday, Wednesday & Saturday:
5:30am - 11:00am
Tuesday, Thursday, Friday & Sunday:
5:30am - 10:00am

I had the same experience as Caitlinnnn a few days after. No lounge access or vouchers, and BNE was a ghost town.

But I did duck in to the QF domestic business lounge beforehand since I was actually connecting from SYD (on VA). I showed my QR mobile boarding pass showing J cabin + digital QR platinum card, and explained why I was there.

Decent place to sit, but lounge was extremely quiet with most things packed up... left at 21:00 and caught the bus over to the international terminal to physically check-in. Turned out to be great (leisurely) timing, with QR boarding early and we were seated in our Qsuites at 22:05!

Incidentally, in typical Qantas style... I asked if they happened to know when the QF international lounge would reopen for longer hours, and got an extremely condescending reply that not only did she not know, "We only open our lounges for our flights!" (emphasis hers). Sure, I understand why QF do it financially, but what a way to send a message to a oneworld partner customer (with OWE no less).

The Qantas international lounge Brisbane is indeed open for all Qantas operated flights. If Qatar wanted Qantas to stay open then they are more then welcome to pay Qantas for the privilege but given the QF/QR relations I wouldn't expect much progress on that front.

It's also worth noting that the Plaza Premium lounge is open daily from 5:30pm to 10:30pm which covers the QR departure so there is nothing stopping them from paying for access to the Plaza Premium lounge (SQ and EK manage to do this).

In saying all this it is odd they're not even providing a voucher as $50 for J passengers was standard in Sydney earlier this year.

I know, I totally get that’s how it works, that QR need to pay QF… and realistically, I’d expect QR to sooner pay VA for their lounge if it ever reopens, given their new tie-up! Or even NZ!

My objection was really to the way the lounge responded to the question at all, like why would I ever think oneworld partners ever work together. Silly me. (I imagine most regular customers wouldn’t be aware of QR/QF relations like we are.)

I’m not sure I could have spent $50 at BNE! Maybe a lot of Subway… but I agree, they could’ve at least offered it.

VA don't have lounges in any international terminals so this won't help much except for Adelaide where it's all one terminal.

I hope I'm wrong but I think the VA/QR tie up will be a fizzer in that regard unless they can come to an agreement similar to Etihad. VA Gold/Plat flying partner airlines like SQ/UA etc can only use the lounges owned and operated by that carrier (UA does have an exception in Australia).

The problem with QR is they hardly operate any international lounges (in fact Doha is the only location) because the handful of Qatar lounges outside of Doha are only open to business class and they send frequent flyers to 3rd party lounges. For the QR/VA alliance to be useful then VA Gold/Plat will need to get access to 3rd party lounge similar to when flying Etihad.

Ah yeah, I was thinking of the old “My Lounge: Home of Virgin Australia” at BNE. Whatever happened to it anyway? I have no idea who the owner is now (I thought it was VA proper originally) and how it was dealt with after VA went into administration. Obviously VA aren’t flying long-haul right now.

Shame there are no QR premium lounges in Australia in any case…

Agree contract lounge access will be important if they’re building out their network properly, given QR’s reliance on them. I’m guessing even in DOH, QR will treat VA status like oneworld and send them to the cough lounges when flying Y.

On the flip side, if you’re flying QR J already, VA status basically doesn’t add anything (assuming still no Al Safwa access unless you are QR own platinum).

The VA/QR partnership hasn’t started yet anyway.

Hi All, just checking if there is any change to Qatar not offering lounge access at BNE international? We’re flying out on the 24th June - SYD to BNE on Qantas and than onto DOH on Qatar. Our stop over in BNE is 4 hours, so if nothing is offered at the international side, we try and get into the Qantas Domestic business lounge as Cryptacardian did.Got QR gold so not sure if I’ll get in.

At this point in time the Qatar airlines website is still showing that there is no access to the Plaza premium lounge (or any other lounge at Brisbane's international terminal - although none others open at 10:40pm QR's departure time).

QR's worldwide lounge website:

Access to the Brisbane airport QF lounges should be easy given you're departing on a one world flight and hold one world status. The last Qantas departure from Brisbane on that Friday is a 9:20pm flight to Darwin so I'd expect the BNE domestic lounges to be open until about 9pm.

It's also worth noting that the Plaza premium lounge is a pay to access lounge, this can be rebooked on the Plaza Premium website for $49 for 2 hours per person or a better value option is via the Dragon Pass app (there are ways to get a free membership - mines via Regus) where 3 hours access is 19GBP (works out at ~AU$33 per person).
