In May I flew Virgin MEL-OOL and left a scarf in a cafe at the gate at Tullamarine airport. I rarely loose things and loved that scarf
After lots of phone calls (many unanswered) to the cafe, to lost property and to Virgin - it appears there are 2 lost property departments - one for the airlines and one for the airport.
As I was returning to Melb 3 weeks later, upon my return I found the lost property department and went to look for my scarf in person. The employee showed me about 5 scarves - none of which were mine, and informed me that after 4 weeks everything is donated to charity.
People have reported on here that staff auction lost items and there doesn't seem to be much of an incentive to return lost property to it owners.
So just a tip - if you do leave something behind at the airport - get in touch with lost property as soon as you can, and persevere.
