Must be the time of year with my family having passport issues!!

My sister in law is currently in New York and lost her passport last Saturday. Personally I suspect it was stolen as she had to show it to security at a bar and then it went "missing" sometime after that.

She has called the consulate and they don't re open until this Friday. So I have a few questions so I can guide her, as she is young and inexperienced.

She has had it cancelled here in Australia via the hotline...and then I'm presuming she will go in, pay the fees and it will take about 2 days to get another one?

The other difficulty is that her next stop after NYC is Cancun...and then she will leave Cancun to go back into the states to fly back to Oz. Will there be a visa issue having being issued a temporary passport or whatever they do, and who does she need to see to get a visa to re enter the states?

Thanks in advance for any advice.

If you ask really nicely - and pay the fee - you can get a same-day passport issued out of the consulate on 42nd street. As soon as you get it, re-apply for a VWP online to allow for re-entry after the visit to Mexico.

Thanks Will, much appreciated!
