I'd thought Emirates wasn't flying over Iraq but the flight plan says differently.

Maybe you'll need to update the thread title to say Venice with a touch of Turkish Delight, Souvlaki & Persian fairy floss.

Ah. Another upgrade! Dubai to Adelaide. Feeling the Emirates love. More later.

I was about to say that the tray table looked suspiciously like whY but alas that must've been VCE/DXB.

Yep. Y Venice to Dubai then a magic upgrade at the boarding gate to J. Perfect.

Sat in the most disliked J seat I'm guessing near the loos. But as an upgrade it was bliss.

Breakfast Pt1 served first at 2am and yes that is Baileys on ice for brekky. We hadn't had any dinner.

Part 2 was a mixed grill. Then sleep.

Lunch was served before arrival (which was 8pm). Not hungry so just soup. The mains were lamb, chicken stir fry or fish?

Started this week with first thoughts for our next major trip, Dubai, Istanbul, Cairo.
I followed this thread, but to save me skimming thru each page to re-find, would you please let me know what hotel you would have "preferred" in Istanbul. (location wise)

Ooh, sorry, life got in the way and Dame the Older has given me a prod to your question. The location I would stay at is Sultanahmet area. There are lots of nice places there and it is right in the buzz, near all the main attractions. Try this link on booking.com as a start.

I just read your trip report with interest, particularly in relation to Istanbul. I will definitely be using the HoHo bus and staying near Sultanahmet area.
I googled HoHo cruise and found similar, but they were a lot more expensive than what you paid. Where did you find your HoHo cruise? Was it just in a local travel brochure?

Thank you for sharing. A great trip report with excellent tips.

We took the hoho cruise from the other side of Istanbul so near the bridge that crosses to Asia.

There are Bosporous cruise touts all over the place in Sultahnamet near the Blue Mosque which are different. They go the other way. You will get brochures shoved under your nose. They seem cheap and will offer deals.

If you want to do the cruise that goes up the river (towards Black Sea) like we did then these are different. If staying in the old district then take the HoHo Bus and get off the stop AFTER the stop that the large ships use as a bus stop. I think it's called the Maritime Museum? Walk down towards the banks and you'll see booths selling the hoho cruise we did.

In the Sultahnamet area the cruises are called Bosporous cruises and they start in the harbour near Galatea Bridge. Hundreds of em. :p

This is the Bosporous cruise area from the Galatea Bridge.

This is the museum near where our hoho cruise left from. If you see the Intercontinental tower in the background up high to your left on the hoho bus you are at the right place to get off the bus. This area is adjacent to Taksim Square. If you get off there, just walk downhill and you'll find the river.

Thanks for such a wonderful trip report. Brought back a lot of memories, particularly Santorini. Photos are fantastic.

The photos surprised me as they were all taken on an iPhone!
Now I've got an iPhone 6 so Thailand at Christmas will be next.
