Hello, I am a long-term Amex customer over 20 years, and for the past 10 years I have been on the so-called "grandfathered" Amex rewards card.
I threaten to quit some years, the last time I did so they gave me 70k of MR points to retain. (They have done so every ~ 2 years until recently).
Now with the upcoming devaluation, I am finally about to lose patience, even though I am usually transferring to VA while redemptions to DOH remain viable (at least compared to Qantas). A few questions:

(1) If I threaten to quit again or ask for a retention bonus before Dec. 15 (my anniversary date being in early December), what is the likelihood I will get one?

(2) In terms of total points received, should I just cancel and wait 18 months and get a new card? If so, what card? Velocity Platinum? Or should I reobtain MR as redemptions are better value even after devaluation with other airlines?

(3) Should I nix Amex permanently altogether?

Keep in mind that no one knows what the credit card landscape is going to look like in 18 months. If the RBA's proposed interchange caps are implemented, the credit card points game in Australia will be, by today's standards, dead. We're talking sign-up bonuses of under 50K points & earn rates of less than 0.5 points per dollar, as occurs in Europe where similar caps exist.

zero

You wont be grandfathered in anymore, but if you have a more rewarding alternative, why stay?
