Just booked myself my next dive trip, and the flight schedules mean I've got a long layover in Port Moresby. My domestic charter flight gets in at ~9am and my flight back to Australia on Air Niugini doesn't leave until ~5pm. I know the city itself isn't exactly safe to wander around on my own, but does anyone have any suggestions as to how to spend 8 hours in Port Moresby? Would be prepared to buy lounge access if it is possible.

Thanks in advance :)

The Air Niugini lounge at POM is nothing much! The immediate airport area is horrible.

Port Moresby in the day time is safe enough if you are not silly. There are nice hotels and restaurants in and near town. Airways hotel is very near the airport, has a shuttle bus and is very popular. Going to major hotels for dinner/lunch/drinks/relaxing seems a popular expat activity in Port Moresby. You could also arrange for a city tour.

Is there somewhere to leave my bags at the airport if I head to a restaurant? A left luggage service or anything? I don't think (?) PX would let me check in 8 hours early.
