Just one out of interest - does anyone know what has more weighting when they are upgrading pax on long-haul flights; status? Flexi/saver? Class? For example, upgrading someone to J, do they take the gold pax in PE, or the plat pax in Y? I've been fortunate to have a few Y to PE upgrades AUS-USA as gold on saver tickets, and often wondered how it all works. I'm guessing it is probably just another one of those things we may never know!

The fare basis doesn't come into it as most of the ops people don't know the difference between a T,Q,Y Economy Fare. They just see everyone as Economy. They'd then look at the manifest and find all their status pax that are currently in Y to find who to move.

I think it would come down to if Y is oversold and PE was full and there was a Plat there, they'd move them to J even if there was a Gold in PE that paid more for their original fare. As they just want to fill the aircraft as best they can while moving as few people as possible.

Now the real question is, if they only need to move 1 person into J and there's two platinums (not travelling together) who do they choose? My guess is they flip a coin.

Move both? Staff are on standby so they can travel in any class? I've seen loads of staff in J anyways

I read the threads from the searching function "how+do+upgrades+work" and find many information's there which help with knowledege and understanding of these things many have discussed in history. Intersting facts and story is told of how the ticket is priced and the platinum or bronze of a flyer is helped with the airline choice.
