Hey team,
Im heading to Chicago area early Oct 24 (the marathon). Anyone have any tips on how to go about finding J seats for 2 using QF FF points? I dont want to bother with the ballache of trying to get SYD-LAX/SFO seats so am happy to try and find seats via asia or the middle east and just pay or use points for economy for the first leg. Willing to realistically land anywhere near Chicago as long as a major airport so i can transfer to Chicago using internal flights. NY, Phillie, Detroit, anywhere with decent long haul availability i'd be open to.

Would just like to have one of the legs done in J. As noted I have loads of FF points so just looking for a way to spend some on a decent flight and enjoy a comfortable flight before and after the marathon!

Any tips would be greatly appreciated, thank you.

What is your QFF status?
Even with a lot of points, ie, high balance, if you are of lower QFF status, your chances of nabbing J seats can be hard.
I know you mentioned you don't want to transit LAX/SFO, but for QF, these are their main cities.
On QFd flights, if there are U seats, QF will let you nab them with points as soon as you put in the use points trigger on the QFF website.
You probably already know, on QFi flights, its the higher status members that get first go at any reward seats available.
They even have their own HBA QF contact phone booking centre, where as lower grade QFF members have to contend with QF's overseas outsourced agents, who might be knowledgeable and can book it for you on the first call, or you might have to HUACA.
Best of luck.
My QF sojourns do not go as far as the US, so I can't say if success is good or not.

Have you considered via YVR?
QF to Vancouver then AA or AS to ORD. Though that might require another domestic US connection if the AA seasonal YVR-ORD non stops aren't going at the moment.

Also QF or JL SYD-HND, then JL or AA HND-ORD.
QF MEL/SYD to DFW then AA to ORD could also be an option.

Oct is not peak demand time of year as its not school holidays in the USA and is end for many Aussie states, so should be possible to find 1 * J seat via LAX, SFO or DFW. DFW will have better connections to ORD than LAX or SFO; as DFW is a larger AA hub.

But as Dr Ralph has said quite often availability of CX via HKG if you do not mind back tracking.

Note that QF do not seem to be following the old 353 rule for J award seats atm. I saw some SYD-DFW/LAX for July last week, but nothing for August or September yet except via Fiji or Taipei.

And of course the option of via LAX on either FJ (or AA) and then to ORD on AA.

Or SYD-AKL-JFK on QF then AA to ORD.

And if you don't mind paying $7,389 in surcharges, EK also fly to ORD 🤣 (OK I'm exaggerating here).

And who knows Oct 2024 is still a way off, there's always a remote chance that there might be a reboot of the Pre-2020 plans for BNE-ORD flights.

Early Oct is the start of the NSW term 3 school hols, so it might be busy on typical routes.

Maybe try via TYO. From Australia, Japan is popular in Ski season (Dec-Jan especially), and a couple of other times throughout the year such as Sakura season. But Oct might be a bit quieter.

Honkers might also be an option. Maybe even Seoul, which is a fairly new route for QF.

Thanks guys, you really delivered! Some helpful options for me to think about. Hong Kong, Tokyo and possibly Seoul seem to be the go for QFF redemptions if i cant land a direct flight to the US from Syd. JAL J doesnt look amazing compared to the middle astern carriers or QF but its an option. Cathay J looks great and Korean Air cabin looks downright average (from what i've seen but could be wrong?). JAL is a great option because I could consider F, and have prev flown JAL F from Syd to Tokyo and it was something special. Great use of 150k QFF points.

I note there is a fair bit of BA availability for DXB to JFK via London but this is a very long journey to get there, but it is an option and BA's 777s seem decent in J. I actually wouldnt mind spending a bit of time in NY before Chicago. Never been, and a long Heathrow stopover could be appealing as i can run from the airport and stretch the legs (yes, i'm one of those weird people that does that as > 2hrs in an airport lounge is a painful concept for me!) but via Asia or Direct is obviously the preference.

Edited to add, it seems like there will be plenty of availability from Asia, middle east to NYC, or ORD which is pleasing. I think the challenge will be getting a J seat out of Syd. No surprises there so i could grab an economy seat and then just keep looking or just suck it up!

Cathay J looks great

I've done a couple of sectors with CX this year and have another one in J from JFK-AKL via HKG. Hard product IS great, service can be a bit hit or miss but a great option for points redemptions if you can find them and the lounges at HKG are pretty amazing.

I second the suggestion for a transit through DFW though if travelling from MEL/SYD w/ QF, it has the best connection options with AA and the lines at immigration seem to be shorter than other arrival ports, at least when QF7 arrives usually.

Thanks but I’m bronze. I’d say I have a better chance of getting Taylor Swift to ask me on a date then a seat from Syd to DFW on business.

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

I’d keep an eye out for reward seats into YVR or SFO. Cheapish cash fares with AS or AA onto ORD. You might have to o/n unless you can score an onward connection all on points - same booking.

If you see either YVR/SFO miraculously appear in your search, double check the multi-sector search if you can get from there to ORD on points.

I just visited ORD after flying into YVR (albeit on a cash fare). Actually managed to get 2x F reward seats on AA into ORD from Yellowstone area.

I have no issues with overnighting. Always love visiting another city. Free stopovers are the best.

Honestly, keep an eye on MEL-DFW - this seems a route ripe for reward seats, and I've had several released personally. The demand is not there as much as from SYD, and the arrival time makes for good connections onto ORD (or the east coast in general) even if delayed. AA will do the right thing out of their biggest hub imo.

I wanted to update you guys on this one. I've split up the booking to just fly SYD to SFO via NAD. Really excited to nab J seats for only 100k points and $175. Looks like an awesome option compared to via Tokyo or Taipei which were the only other options i could see. Originally discounted Fijian because i thought they were still the coughpy A330 seats but given its an A350 it looks great to me and we should sleep on it nicely before the marathon in Chicago! Great option for getting to the US.

JL for mine. Availability already popping up for Oct. 2024. Reliably available at the moment, too.

Seeing two seats HND-ORD on Oct. 9 and 11 (flights land 10am same day). Getting from SYD to HND might be a bit tougher, but have a play.

Hopefully not a silly question, but thought I'd ask: is Chicago the only place you want to go to on this trip? The reason I ask is that at least with Qantas Points you can often get more bang for your buck booking a OneWorld award which will effectively allow you to travel around the world for slightly more points than a return business ticket to ORD. This also has the benefit of breaking up the trip so that you can find availability. For instance, you might find availability to say Japan no problems, then a couple days later there is a flight to Chicago available with JAL. Another popular option for breaking up these flights is routing via Honolulu. The benefit there is you aren't dealing with a massive airport, and you get a nice little mini-vacation in paradise.

Personally, I wouldn't bother booking a cash ticket for part of the trip and then an award ticket for the other bit. What if you face a delay on one of the tickets and end up misconnecting? If you have everything on one itinerary you are protected in those instances.

If seats are available for SYD > LAX or SYD > SFO are you concerned that you'll never find availability on those routes or do you not like connecting through those airports? IMHO those two airports are arguably some of the best in the world for OneWorld flyers, especially if you are flying business. Great lounges at both airports (Qantas J and American Flagship at LAX whereas SFO has a really nice Admirals club). LAX has the edge IMHO as they always have the shortest security lines anywhere since you get to shop around and find a TSA checkpoint with no queues, clear that checkpoint then just walk to the gate/lounge.

Thinking in terms of OneWorld (the alliance Qantas is part of) your major hubs in the east of the Mississippi would be Chicago Orchard Field (ORD), New York (JFK) and Philadelphia (PHL).

If you are doing a marathon, I would argue the less time you spend on a plane the better. Don't get me wrong, I enjoy flying, I've got Platinum status and just yesterday I took 4 flights for no reason other than to earn status credits. But flying does have an impact on your health and performance. Remember, the cabin of most airliners is very dry, you are losing a lot of fluid on a flight, and that's before you put your hand in the liquor cabinet. Now I am not an elite athlete by any stretch of the imagination, but what I do find is after I take a long trip, I don't perform as well cycling compared to before I left for a sojourn like that.

Have you considered via YVR?
That's a possibility, and supposing the airline chosen supports OSS it is a very simple transit process. Essentially you clear TSA security and US pre-clearance then head to the gate. Since you clear much shorter immigration at Vancouver instead of at a major airport in the US, it means no long queues.
QF to Vancouver then AA or AS to ORD. Though that might require another domestic US connection if the AA seasonal YVR-ORD non stops aren't going at the moment.
The fewer connections the better and I suspect there won't be much of a non-stop option on OneWorld at that time.
Also QF or JL SYD-HND, then JL or AA HND-ORD.
It's a possibility although it will add extra travel time to the itinerary which may or may not be optimal if you are about to run a marathon. With that being said, I do hear that JAL has an excellent J product these days.
QF MEL/SYD to DFW then AA to ORD could also be an option.

Having flown to all of the QF US hubs now internationally I would tend to agree with your assessment here on DFW over say LAX or SFO. The immigration lines aren't as chokers as the former and it isn't a labyrinth to navigate like LAX. The security queues can be a bit longer though at DFW, especially if you don't have TSA pre-check like yours truly as the queue for non pre-check was 25 minutes when I was there a couple weeks ago. Meanwhile the pre-check line which was backed up all the way to the AA check-in desks that I joined cleared in 5 minutes. Now that is fast!

I think Fijian a350>Jal 777 business and less time in the air (plus no availability on jal anyway). China airlines would be an awesome stopover in taipe but the number of points needed is a bit of a rort at 180k vs 120k on Fijiian.
