Hi. Two friends are booking an LONE4 from Perth for departure in July and I was wondering if you guys could give any advice/comments on the itinerary, as well as whether the platinum challenge was possible. They are going to be doing the student thing and living cheaply, so the aim is to keep costs low.

The proposed routing is per-(syd-)scl-ush-(scl-)lim-gru-lhr-ist-(amm-)cai-amm-(hkg-)ktm-hkg-pek-(nrt-)cts-nrt-per

So my questions are (apart from the ones above), 1. There's too many asia segments, is it best to go amm-del-hkg and buy a ticket to kathmandu somewhere else or get to sapporo via a different carrier or just buy more segments.

2. They want to make their way on land from istanbul to helsinki, then fly back from helsinki to istanbul to resume the RTW. Again, what is the pest way to do this/what are their options. I seem to remember some chatter about oneway trips being more expensive in europe than returns...?

3. They also want to visit cuzco after lima for a trek. Is it best to find a lim-cuzco return from somewhere else?

4. RJ180, in may at least (at a glance...) seems to go AMM-HKG direct. They want to fly sometime in november but i can't seem to find it. Does it still exist then?

Any other thoughts?

Thanks in advance, i'm sure I'll have a heap more questions after your answers.

Hi Cynicor. Unfortunately the Platinum Challenge won't be possible as travel is required on an AA flight number for 10,000 miles.

The routing also appears to have too many South American sector and SCL-USH (IIRC) is a two sector flight via PUQ. USH-LIM is then a three sector flight which maxes out South America. You could look at the South America Airpass to cover these options or simple point to points.

As for Kathmandu, you could get around this by buying a separate ticket or buy a separate ticket to CTS which may be a cheaper option than Dragonair to KTM.

I've had a quick look and RJ180 seems to be a 1 stop flight via BKK but isn't scheduled after 25th October 2008. The flights to HKG are a new routing for RJ with the first flight commencing on 22 January 2008 on Tuesdays, Thursday's and Saturday's on newly refurbished A310's. It may be possible that RJ are testing the waters on these flights and will schedule the route further once they have guaged demand.
