How many of us none Sydneysider loath going via Sydney. The last time I flew via Sydney was over 8 years ago. I was packed into a cramped bus, along with a lot of smelly people. Is this still the case when you go from Domestic to International terminals. Melbourne may not have a railway to Tullamarine, Brisbane may not have many Airlines services her. But at least we don't have any buses

By the way I am looking at going to Japan and thought I would use JAL. Thoughts people, and be nice to me Please

Coming from HBA, I prefer SYD as my gateway to overseas, although I must admit I avoid it if I am just going on a DOM trip, say to BNE or ports north (chance of storms/weather and other delays, mainly).

If you don't like the DOM -> INT transfer bus at SYD, options are taxi or train (or walk :) ). All these options would have been available 8 years ago, when you were last there.

But is the transfer bus really that much of a consideration when contemplating an 8+ hour overseas flight? I'm more likely to choose on the basis of connection convenience / lounge attractiveness / general amenity.

Everyone complains about the bus but is it any worse than the escalators and trains in many airports like HKG - probably come to think of it.

It's not the people who are smelly btw it's the bus :p

BNE has a bus between terminals too.

Personally the Std transfer bus is great for plane spotting, that and of course the extra SCs are usually gained in going via SYD.

Anywho YMMV

;)................:D

Edit: Can't be any worse than the London Tube.

What is the big deal?

I live in Sydney and when I travel overseas I usually like to connect from another Australian city. I have gone via MEL, BNE and PER. When I have departed overseas from BNE I have connected via SYD.

My next flight on Boxing Day from SYD is via BNE. And the connection between terminals is the T-Bus.

Think the train is for you. It's been an option for Sydney terminal transfers for a long time now. I took it on Monday - almost empty and took about 2 minutes.

It's not the way out of the country that's the problem, it's the way in! I do SIN-MEL return a number of times every year. To do this I absolutely prefer the non-stop services. But I have (for various reasons) transited SYD a few times, ADL twice, BNE once. Without doubt ADL was the easiest transfer, 12 mins from plane door (arriving from SIN) to Qantas Club, including luggage collection, immigration and recheck. For SYD, I can cope with the outbound connections, but I detest inbound via SYD, the last thing you want after o/night flight. It's nice to get straight into MEL. Of course for places where you have to connect irrespective (eg HBA, CBR) the difference is probably marginal.

IME the outbound is usually ok (Dom --> Int).

Its inbound thats appalling.

YMMV

I don't like the bus too but I do like the F lounge on the other side :)

I think the bus is symptomatic of the priorities and attitudes of SYD owners. No DECENT international airport would force you onto public roads and/or make passengers PAY to transit between terminals. SYD is all about ripping as much as possible from travellers & giving back as little as possible.

Ahhhh, Macquarie Bank. Why on earth the govt saw fit to sell the airport is beyond me.

That would be "...along with a lot of smelly people *also not from Sydney*". We can't help what passes for hygiene in other places. ;)

My kids like the bus ride.....I like the Flounge.

I reckon they'd love them. A fee coming and going. What could be better?

Macquarie has already got their fees. They are booking a further small gain of $377m by giving their Sydney airport shares away to its shareholders.
Transit passengers or any other passengers at Sydney are no longer an interest to Macquarie.

Zachary! Any airport that charges you money to transfer between terminals automatically sucks! Big time!
