Hey everyone,As many of you know I was lucky enough to be working in Beijing for the Olympics in 2008. I will be in London for 2012 doing the same role (I will be running another thread giving you an inside account next year).I am currently in London attending the World press briefing. So although not strictly a trip report, I can give you some inside news on the Games.Today is actually the last day but I have a tour of the Olympic Green so I shall post photos later today too. It will include the Aquatics and main stadium. In short London is super prepared, and I am really excited about how it will turn out next year. We have been briefed on all aspects including all the transport available. So over a few posts I'll post some information and what I have seen and what you can expect.Nick

Post away Nick! Mrscove and I are ticketed for flights and events so we are thinking about it.

We will have to swap hotel addresses, so we can meet up at some stage. I'm staying near Russell square.

Ok here is a sneak peak of the Olympic Stadium, more details later!

Thank for the taster photo for the Olympics!
We will stay down in Canary Wharf for the duration of the events.
Actually I was just so pleased to get points redemption air fares on SQ where as each day to travel first came available almost a year out I went click for the two of us and we are straight into LHR.
I thought it would be a struggle but the dates we chose to travel were totally available on the run PER-SIN-LHR then back.

I thinking about going to the Games but at this stage the hotel rates are prohibitive. It will be interesting to see if that changes or I may have to crash on a friends floor (not ideal for 2 weeks).

OK I am finally back in front of a laptop to give you a run down!

The organising committee (in this case LOCOG) organise yearly press briefings to inform us on what is going to happen about all aspects on the upcoming Olympics. It includes everything from catering to technology to security. This was the 3rd World Press Briefing and it has run for 3 days. Thursday is the last official day where we do tours - I'm off to Wimbledon. It's been a great event as we have spoken directly to the organisers airing concerns and receiving updated information.

I won't bore you with all the details but I can say London really has it together! It will be an amazing games. The facilities are really something. Even the transport looks good - "The Javelin" will run from Kings Cross to the Olympic green in 7 minutes. They are talking 200 trains per hour during the peak period!

Our sessions covered things like: transport, security, rate card (the shopping catalogue of services), Press operations, Logistics and deliveries into the Olympic park (a real nightmare!), the Paralympics which i think will be great (I really want to see wheelchair rugby after hearing about it! they have a team welder!), location of photo positions at the venues, Technology to be used (wifi won't be used at the Olympics for Press due to reliability for example), and external things like the Torch Relay and the cultural and festivals.

One highlight for me was Tuesday night were we were given an official reception by the London City Council in Guildhall near St. Pauls. This was truely amazing. The building is several hundred years old (like most things in London). Playing in the corner was the London Philharmonic Orchestra! Champagne was flowing and Canapes were everwhere. After the official speaches we were treated to something not many people would - a private "West End" performance. This started with the lead from the Wizard of Oz singing over the rainbow. The next - which to me was the show stopper, was Music of the Night from Phantom, sung by Anthony Warlow. Next was Les Miserables, followed lastly by Billy Elliot. London does know how to turn it on! That was really one of the biggest highlights of the night.

Wednesday I was one one of the tours to the Olympic Park, where we visited the Olympic Stadium, the Main Press Centre (MPC) and the Aquatics venue. Altough brief we got to see how it was all looking. The Aquatics is almost finished, they are just working on the temporary parts of the structure, the Stadium is almost done too (track laid as well). The MPC is still a "shell" so all the offices need to be built. To give you an idea of numbers, over 6,000 media will be covering the Olympics (not counting broadcast).

This is inside the main stadium, at the photographer head on position (which looks up the main straight). During the 100m final there will be around 200 photographers in this area and down in the Moat - all trying to get that winning frame.

Overlooking the Swimming pool, the diving pool is on the far end.

And of course me on the pool deck!

The pool bears a striking resemblance to SOPAC.
Sounds like you had a great time :)
Looking forward to the coverage

Nick you look good on the pool deck!
Mrscove will be in London on Sunday and I am left behind in Perth.
Thanks for your pictures.....it doesn't seem like 11 years since Sydney and we had a real blast of a time in 2000 and Los Angeles in 1984 was fantastic.
It looks good for London!

I thought we should check to see which AFFers have decided to go to London for the Olympics.

My hubby has been in the Australian Olympic Team four times as part of the Medical Team. Seoul, Barcelona (his favourite) Atlanta and Sydney. He has marched in each of the opening ceremonies and we can see him on the video. In Sydney he was able to get me and the two children into the Athletes Village. Oh my, that was amazing. I have a great photo of the two kids sitting on the team balcony sharing a coke with Peter Brock who was part of the team support .
We'll be in London while the Games are on but not attending anything.

Think this could be my first post. Long time lurker.

I'll be in flying into Heathrow on 9 August. Was planning on staying for 2 nights but now looking at skipping it given hotel prices. Does anyone have any recommendations? I would love to stay if I could find something for under 150 per night with a private bathroom.

We will be there for the Olympics.

I have quite a large group attending with me. Closer to the date, maybe we can work out a get together. I'm hosting my group (family and friends) so I will be spending the majority of my time with them.

Due to my house renovation not being completed, we are all staying at the Mandarin Oriental for 3 weeks so it's a fairly central location.

I'll be here but not going, after 2 failed attempts at getting tickets via London's poorly managed ballot system I gave up.

SHS, have you looked around the Bayswater area? Have you also considered something outside of zone 1/2 and then take a 20-30 minute train in each day?

I'll see what tickets I have spare. I have probably over purchased. You could well be in luck.

At this stage I've still got about 6 for both opening and closing ceremony's plus heaps to various events throughout the games.

I will try and grab a drink with you next time I'm there. Did you still have my UK number?

Yes I do indeed! Shall I inform the wife? ;)

When I am in London next I will have more of an idea of which tickets are surplus to my requirements. We can work it out then. In typical bossreggie style, I won't be seeking any money for them, rather I'd encourage a donation to a charity in the UK.

As per my PM I was happy to buy, but charity instead it is :)

Timing could work well if all the ducks line up as I've been struggling for ideas for a birthday present ;)
