Just another question about waitlisting for Qantas ... I was lucky enough to get my wailtist for QF 5 / QF 9 from SYD to LHR a couple of weeks ago, but now I am waiting for another one from LHR to SYD before New Year.

Therefore, I'm wondering whether anyone knows where you can find info regarding the number of people currently waitlisted on a specific flight??

And with that, what the hell do you do when you see people who are waitlisted for upgrades before you ? If there's QF Plats there, you probably haven't got a cat in hell's chance.

Do you just accept the fact that you won't get upgraded and so 'drop' out of the line ? Is there any way of knowing (before you get on the plane), (and if so, how early can you find out ?) if your points upgrade / upgrade credits will be good to use on that flight - i.e. how early can you get confirmation that you're in business class, instead of coach ?

Icemann. Take a chill pill.... Given Nick's status (as per his posts elsewhere), and looking at loadings availablity around Xmas, I don't think he is talking about upgrades, I suspect he's talking about getting a seat on a plane on anything other than Y or H. Whether or not an upgrade is available is one thing, but it is totally different to whether or not you can get a seat on the plane.

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

True.....

But is there any way we can know who's in the line for an upgrade ? (e.g. higher level FFs)

Yep, I think you jumped the gun a little Icemann :p Though I'd love to hold your status and have the pleasure of holding Upgrade credits and thus having the opportunity to use them, I'm just trying to accrue as many points as possible to get me out of my measly "Bronze" status.

As dajop said, I'm only enquiring about my chances of getting a seat. I'm confirmed on QF 5 from SYD to SIN, but I'm waitlisted on QF 9 from SIN to LHR. All I really want to know is the probability of me getting a seat on the flight and if anyone knows where this information can be obtained from

I actually got out of bronze status little by little...by doing discount economy fares. Most of the travel was for leisure, with some for work.

I started off with Qantas Club Bronze, then I did a few RTW tours. These were within a year of each other, and every year, I would miss out on Silver by about 25-50 SCs. But, I flew a RTW business trip, a leisure trip to BNE from ADL return and had a long haul business fare. With the long haul business fare (one way), that put me over to Silver, and I had a few trips after that. It takes a bit of a push to 'jump up' the level, but once you have it, it is easier. A bit like paying the $297 joining fee (the most expensive luggage tags you'll ever buy) for the QC club, but after that, the membership drops from $614 to about $317 for one year.

But that was about 3 years ago. I've still kept my status, and the great thing is, once you qualify, you get to hold it (if you time it right) for nearly two years. I qualified for Silver and was due for my next 'check up' a year and a half away. Since then, I've gone up a bit. :)

Once you get the higher status, it is actually easier to hold on to than 're-qualify'. You have to keep flying (obviously), but it is a damn sight easier to hold 300 SCs per year than 350 to qualify for Silver, and 600 as opposed to 700 for Gold.

I seem to remember an earlier post, where I recommended the QC to you. Believe me, if you can afford it, (and I know it's expensive), but sometimes, esp. for me recently - you get into LAX or LHR and your body is screaming because of the jet lag / tiredness. You just want a shower, a comfy chair and a big drink. And you can get all three in the QC or a partner lounge. Believe me, it has saved me. At that point in time, when you just don't care anymore, you're glad for the QC lounges and your membership. You're glad you can check-in within 5 minutes while everyone else is in economy. The QC lounges are my peace and quiet before boarding.

Like the time I got into PER at 1600 one day, and there was a MASSIVE check in for the plane. I was a QC bronze member, sauntered up to the QC counter, checked in, and you could feel the waves of envy and the evil stares as I strolled on by ! :D

BTW - if you are a QC member (and everyone, please correct me if I am wrong) - you should get priority waitlisting above other members (but obviously not above higher members, e.g. silver, gold, plat)

Thanks Icemann for your suggestions. The good thing is that I'm seriously considering joining QC, as my trip to Europe will mean that I am passing through Singapore, London, Paris and Rome. As I have a one-hour stopover in SIN on the way to LHR, I am thinking that the time could be spent nicely in the QC lounge :D

Despite that, I'm still a fair way off reaching Silver FF status and I think it will take me a little while to acquire it. As I did a leisure trip to BKK in Feb / March this year, I'm now kicking myself for joining FF last year in July (got caught up in the hysteria when we booked the trip). I probably could have made it to Silver if I had of joined FF just before I left for BKK, and had this LHR trip in November, and probably another couple of domestic ones after that.

Other problem is that, since I'm a Uni student, the funds don't stretch too far in order to get trips in Y and J class. Still, I've started early so it should only be a matter of time before more status credits start rolling in. I'm starting a new job next month so hopefully I'll get a few trips with that.

Nick,

Have a look at this if you are interested. It comes in the form of a monthly newsletter from ABC travel.

"Please find attached this weeks travel specials from Australia and around the world. If you require any further information please email your inquiry to [email protected] or telephone Sydney 92334777. QF Club at $254.92pa save $62pa. Details – email [email protected]"

This should make the QF club membership a little easier on the pocket.

I emailed them this morning so I'll be interested to see what happens :D

You may have to cough up a 'joining fee' - $297.

However, the luggage tags that you get are really nice. Even though they are the most expensive one's you'll ever buy. :D

And as some people say...mmm, airline lounges. This shower is costing me $X (and they have worked out how much it costs them, based on how often they go there ! :) )

My company has Corporate Membership with QC. So I am a corporate member and the fee is about 15% to 20% lower. They offer this to some professional organisations as well (like Australian Computer Society). If you are working, don't forget to claim it as a tax deduction which brings the cost by half if you are in the highest tax bracket.

Get Lifetime Gold and no more fees. :D In fact I haven't paid any fees for the last 5 years due to (I suspect) the Platinum status. :D In any case I don't ask in case someone reckons I should be paying.

Obviously different deals are made available to different companies. How does a salary sacrifice figure of $150 with no joining fee and GST refunded sound :?:

Effective rate about $70 pa :!:

That's big business for you :!:
