I have a long haul MEL-AUH-DUB booked and ticketed by VA but EY metal on most sectors. I rang VA to add a domestic leg to/from MEL and the response (quite rudely for the Plat line) was that it is not possible.

I was checking every parameter I could think of; ticketstock, change conditions, cancel/rebook fees, linking a Dom PNR, etc. but the VA agent was impatient saying "not possible system wont let me so I wont try".

In the end I was satisfied the VA agent believed what she was saying, but Im curious why an airline would so restrict itself to make further sales on an existing ticket ?

I would be just as well to book the Dom sector on QF (better checked luggage allowance) since the VA agent clearly said that VA wont interline on split PNRs.

They might need to reissue the whole ticket to add new sectors on, perhaps this is why?

I often find that at check-in at the airport they can book the luggage all the way through on two tickets, but I wouldn't say that is always. I assume given your location that you are undertaking a domestic CBR-MEL route? The only thing I would say with that respect, is that Virgin CBR can only handle a limited number of connections for checked baggage - got me on a flight to Europe last year. Luckily, SQ in Sydney was able to ticket the luggage all the way through otherwise I would have had to collect baggage in Zurich before the next leg.

Even with QF this needs ghost segments (sometimes known as information segments). It needs someone who really knows what they are doing but QF Platinum line can usually handle this and it does need proper AMADEAS (or in VA's case SABRE) training and a willingness to help.

Assuming the existing ticket allows for end-on-end bookings, it shouldn't be too much for someone at VA to issue another ticket within the same PNR. I'd try calling back again..
