likelihood of upgrade?

32 E & F on the upper deck are still available...? Im current 70K with 2 open seats next to me

not silly i learnt it from here
on the A380 there is 2 separate Y (econ) cabins, most of downstairs and a small upper Y cabin, rows 32-36 , much quieter and faster service.
if you go on website to select your seats you may be able to select the upper cabin now you are getting close to departure. if you can i personally recommend row 32 , 35 (Exitrow),33 in that order. and just as a huge tip. the peeps you are competing with for upgrades will be up here, so if you want to get a good seat watch the available seats like a hawk and they will often open up in the last 24 hours as upgrades get allocated. grab 32 A or K the second it comes on board.
and it the website wont let you select the seats, a quick call to CS and you might be lucky to get them to slot you in
good luck

Remember that not everyone pre- allocates their seats ahead of time so what you see now ie two 'spare' seats next to you is unlikely to still be the case once everyone on the flight has checked in as a lot if passengers won't get their seat allocation until they checkin around 2-3 hours prior to departure.

tend to agree with that. I'd prob go the upper deck as suggested. Specially if last minute upgrades might free up some in that area that potentially could help - if you're not upgraded of course!

Upgrade Status... Declined... Waaaahhhhhhhhh!

Oh well, the lady at the counter "Anne" was so nice!!! Polite helpful and really tried.
Anyway she said the only period where upgrades to the US are potential.. really are: Sept - Nov... the rest of the months always have some reason to be busy and are booked so far in advance.

Only ones that usually happen are Bus --> First Class upgrades... Yeah, I'm not there...
She also told me i had buckleys of getting my return flight upgraded as well, at least now i can just let it go and just get through it...

Ok guys, Thanks for all your advise I'm in Row 32 so happy with that!

Take Care

One day in a universe far off.... a upgrade will come through for us commoners .... not becuase they have to, but cause they can.

If it was my airline and my J and F had availability of say above 50% and above I would upgrade random passengers (1 or 2) at the gate so they can experience it and hopefully next time purchase that class, what is it going to cost them extra nothing.

Aww darn sorry no joy on the upgrade. Hope that seat in row 32 next to you stays free at least.

The best part is when you expect nothing, sometimes that's when the surprises happen. Don't give up hope till you pass through the EGR, and even then....

Either way enjoy your flight and time in the US "or wherever your final destination is" :)

I still wish that Qantas would stop using the term "declined". Makes us feel like naughty children...would be a lot better if they used the term "unsuccessful"....don't you think???

Sadly they no longer fly the SYD-SFO route. Both times I flew it (in the SFO-SYD direction), I got a Y->J upgrade with points. Only times that has happened in 20 years of flying QF...

I think that was one of my flights. The aircraft was basically full.

I was a regular on QF73/74, and I think I only flew in my ticketed cabin once. It was near impossible to not get upgraded either at check-in or at the gate.

Economy was always full, with Premium, Business and First all being largely empty. I think I was one of the few Platinums (if not the only one) on board, as every time I was upgraded, the Customer Service Manager would approach me and talk to me. The person sitting next to me would always ask 'what's all that about?' as I was handed express passes etc.

I was under the belief that they had a good freight route on SYD-SFO, but apparently not good enough to keep. Was hoping it'd come back with 787's, but seeing as they're not likely to get any in Qantas livery any time soon, i'm not holding my breath (and at least Los Angeles has improved drastically over the past 6 months for arrivals).

What's a good way to determine upgrade chances? Loading? Number of business class seats available for sale?

Have a flight coming up in 5 days and returning in 13 days and I can purchase 9 business class seats on those flights.

Thanks. I will post in the loadings thread.

I was thinking about this earlier. Upgrades are something I have not done in the past. Time to start learning.
