"Like" for Togo..

Hi All,

My daughter has inherited my travel bug. However she has also decided to put a little bit bit back into the community and so at present post-Uni and before she starts at her new full-time career in March she is volunteering at a very small charity in Togo for 3/4 months. Togo is one of the poorest countries in the world.

And by small I mean small, as their total yearly budget is only 3000 Euro!

She chose the charity because it is small, and that she felt that she could make a difference there.

She has indicated that the charity's director wants 100 facebook likes for Christmas. It was at only 50 odd as it is not at all well known..but has now zoomed to 96 as we have helped to publicise it amongst friends. However perhaps those reading this may choose to make a small charity happy by taking a few minutes to visit their facebook site and 'Like" the main profile (PDH-Togo), and to assist in getting the numbers well past 100.

Your visit may assist them by making them that little bit more well known. If you could do this then it will be a small gift of time that will mean a lot to those at the charity. And yes that is my daughter in some of the recent images on the facebook site.




PERHAPS A LITTLE MORE?

By her own initiative my daughter has also decided to do a little more and has sent the following message to family and friends.

Together though we can surprise PDH with something better, funds to enable their work to reach more people. Wrapped up with your name attached.

Donations however small will be appreciated as even $5 stretches a long way in Togo. And remember the charities annual budget is only 3000 Euro.

To give you an idea of how far your money can go:

$5 A semester's primary school fees for a child
$10 A week's worth of food and medicine for an AIDS victim
$20 A supply of medicine and visit to the doctor
$30 The purchase of assorted goods to establish a roadside store
$45 A cesarean birth in the local hospital
$90 A three year seamstress apprenticeship to set a girl up for life
$180 The same apprenticeship, full board for the full three years

The Charity often assists with medicine and first aid. The man in the image below my daughter walked to hospital with the charity assisting with medicines and bandages.

You will note milk formula in some of the site pics. This however is for mothers who have HIV and therefore unfortunately cannot breastfeed their own children.

Thanks OP for giving us the opportunity to share your pride in your daughter's work in Togo. Great to see Aussie youth willing to help others less fortunate than themselves. Also good to learn about a grass roots/local charity operating in one of the poorest areas of the world as too often the problems of Africa seem too big for individual responses. Hope there are lots of likes and donations.

I am sure that both your daughter and the charity will benefit from her time there.

Yes it is most pleasing to see her volunteer her time, and all at her own initiative.

She wad always keen to make volunteering a part of her trip prior to full time work and spent a lot of time researching where she felt she could contribute best.

Her choice is certainly well off the beaten track!

One of my father's favorite sayings is that you should put back in more than you take.

So good to see that she has heeded his advice.

Hi again,

I thought that some would be interested to know that Jess's campaign so far has $1245 in, plus $290 pledged.
This has well exceeded Jess's original expectation of several hundred dollars, and thank you to the two AFFers whi have chipped in. Thank you also yo those that have taken the time to "Like" the charities Facebook page.

This will make a big difference to the charity as their yearly budget is only 3000 Euro.

Jess will announce the combined donations on Dec17.

Dec 17 arrived and the appeal reached One Million Francs, or $1925.
