LHR to LAX Return cheaper then One way?

I'm flying to LA ... then after a couple of weeks a friend is shouting me a free flight to London (on virgin atlantic)... although I have to return back to LA for my return flight to aus.

The question is from my searches so far (I'm leaving london between 28/7 and 30/7) it seems that return is almost the same price (some cases even cheaper) then one way.

The cheapest seems to be about $900 USD oneway (air zn and BMI) or about the same for a return price... Should I wait for a cheaper sale price?
What airline should I keep an eye on?

for some reason, one-ways can be very expensive, and sometimes more than a return (as you've discovered). I'd suggest to your friend that you purchase a return, and he contribute 1/2 of the ticketed price - I doubt it's going to get better.

So I might have to stick with Air NZ
