Let's Buy Qantas Shares

Didn't know this was a option... Can't find anything on Google to back it up

Not an option

Not difficult to have more shares than most of the Qantas board members... Pretty pathetic really

What if you are a major share holder?

Chairman's Lounge membership is by invitation. I don't think 10 or 20 million shares would get you in.
More likely you would need to be a pillar of industry or Government or in charge of a major travel budget in a business that runs in the millions. Anyway that is my guess on CL.

Is Qantas in dire trouble? I thought the latest was a turn around & Making a profit again.

Had a great flight today on QF317 returning to Singapore.:)

Some Qantas staff told me that they are buying Qantas shares and I see it’s reported in the news today that Qantas staff are buying shares to save the airline.

Based on the number of marketing emails I seem to get these days, the strategy of turning Qantas into a financial services company that moonlights as an airline, is paying off.

Qantas announces up to $500m share buyback on record $921m half-year profit.

Principle 1
Share buyback programs are not good if the company pays too much for its own shares!

And continues to stuff customers with a bulls**t fuel surcharge.

Presumably Mr Joyce and senior management have vested share options at around $2 a share so instead of paying dividends to long suffering shareholders, it's more in their interest to use company money to buy back shares.

Sold mine at 251% profit. They no longer look attractive IMHO. Upside maybe 4.10 but no dividends and not enough upside to warrant increasing or buying more.

Once the ACCC gets into them for overcharging customers on the fake fuel levy, a lot of their profit will start to decline I suggest. YMMV.

Apparently there are no franking credits available.

This is correct. For those who are suggesting that the company is screwing the customer while the last two years or so have been strong, I don't really think the share holders have got any better a deal over say a 10 year period.

A Motley Fool advisor is advising to sell QF shares.

That probably seems like a rash comment. After all, hasn't the Qantas share price risen from under $1 to over $4 in the past couple of years? What do I have against making money?
But that's the thing about historical numbers – you can choose whatever time period suits your case. Indeed, if you'd bought Qantas shares at the end of 2007, you'd still be down around 35 per cent on your investment.
Long term results are far more useful than short term numbers. More useful again, though, is a decent understanding of an industry, itself.

Australia's airlines? Fly 'em, but please, don't buy 'em. And if you own 'em, I'd suggest it's time to sell.
