I am looking at a OW reward booking, an option is SFO-JFK-LHR either AA/BA or AA/BA and it will be on the same PNR. In the past when departing the US it has either been from location I have been in for a few days and when connecting it involved terminal changes. Most connections were not on the same PNR. If travelling the above route and given the arrival and departure is through T8 (also assuming will be checked through, same PNR) at JFK is it possible to transit and clear immigration airside or do you need to go landside back through immigration.

You just got me thinking on this. There is no departure immigration from memory. The airline scans your passport and that's if. My last departure from the US was from DCA, going DCA-JFK T8 and then JFK (T8) - LAX - SYD on QF12. At no point did I clear any immigration and nothing else was scanned (other than boarding passes at the gate) at JFK or LAX. In fact we were running so late that it was straight off one aircraft and onto another at LAX.

But if you are just getting off one (domestic) aircraft and getting on another (international) in T8, there would be no exit immigration anyway.

Edit: There are no exit ‘controls’ in the US.

Certainly no immigration at exit. T8 is very easy to navigate you will have no issues. Make sure you use the correct lounge too if you have status.

So hence the question

How quickly I have forgotten, it has been about 16 months since in the US and I was googling connection times to see what had/ if anything has changed due to Covid. The results kept coming back at 2-3+ hours I thought how can this be correct and trying to convince myself that exiting the US was not that hard, I now realise these were arrival connection times  :( I thought I was going mad.

Been through T8 a few times and to this date MrsM still thinks the Flagship lounge at JFK is the best lounge in the US. Also the last time she was there was in the final stages of redevelopment and IIRC as x2 OWE + daughter were given access to the lounge when flying JFK-SFO in J. From what I have read on the net access to this lounge has become more restrictive but with many points being returned I am planning F travel if it is available.
