Hi all,

Finally managed to get some decent flights for my trip to Costa Rica next year, but am curious about one of the transfers at LAX. Previous experience there has been that I clear customs and drop my bags, change terminals and then clear security for the next flight. Easy enough.

But on this trip, I'm flying JFK-LAX-BNE, all on the one ticket.

JFK-LAX is on QF108 and then LAX-BNE on QF16 about 2 hours later. When I check in in NYC, can I check my bags all the way through to Brisbane? Or do I have to pick them up in LA and re-drop? There's a change of terminals at LAX since it would appear I land at TBIT and depart out of T4 (this seems strange, as I thought QF flights departed from Terminal B, but perhaps not?), so unclear if the bags will get checked through or not.

Appreciate others advice an experience with this :)

QF in JFK will check your bags through to BNE. You won't need to touch them again until arrival in BNE.

QF16 to BNE leaves from T4, the AA terminal. I think you should be able to get a transfer bus airside from TBIT to T4, but I've only done it T4 to TBIT, not vice versa. This would save you from going through security again at T4. I'm sure someone will correct me if you can't use the transfer bus.

Yeah, that's what I was hoping for...Not having to clear T4 security. I've landed at TBIT and transferred to T4 before, but it's always been an INT-DOM connection meaning I have to clear customs and do it the long way. And T4 security can be painfully slow, even at the best of times.
