Hi everyone

Has anyone seen anything about when Qantas will reinstate LAX-JFK? I'm travelling in 15 July and would love to go straight through rather than switch to AA like I currently have booked.

Any insight appreciated!

I personally dont see it returning.

Can't see that returning, imo. Suspect QF may be off-loading pax onto AA flights whilst parking the 787 during the day.

Won't be back anytime soon and likely be one of the last sectors to come back, if it does at all (with sunrise on the horizion etc). Pax can be routed onto AA codeshares anyway so.....

They'll lose their slots if they don't use them once the covid waivers expire (as I posted above).

They won't risk that. Even if they have to throw a 737 on the route, possibly wet leased from AA. They'll do something.

Lease them to someone else.

JFK worked when they had 3 flights arriving at once feeding into JFK.

I'm not sure if FAA allow subleasing of slots - if you know they do then that's fine. From what I've read it doesn't look promising:

Air carriers holding slots on December 16, 1985, are "grandfathered,"'14 and may buy, sell, trade, or lease those slots beginning April 1, 1986.'1 International slots are treated specially and their transfer is restricted.' 6 Slots not used at least 65% of the time must be returned to the FAA and, along with other newly available slots, distributed by lottery.

I know it happens in Europe / UK.

JFK worked when they had 3 flights arriving at once feeding into JFK.

And they will again (have 3 morning arrivals and evening departures.)

Not soon. That would tie up another wide-body. QF seems to be short on wide-bodies as it is. Single-aisle would probably be a bit crazy.

As noted above QF is already doing agressive aircraft scheduling at LAX as is (I know this changes soon) eg there's no more all day lounging around at LAX (or doing a roundtrip to JFK) as in the past, both 11/12 and 93/94 are landing and turning in just a few hours, so they clearly need more equipment feeding into LAX. They wouldn't send the 380 to JFK - too many seats and probably not ideal for other reasons (eg: short sectors, etc).

Now if they do the 330's on BNE-LAX and sync up all the timings I could see that 330 doing a JFK turn. Maybe.

QF does have some 787 they haven’t taken delivery of yet. I guess that could be another option, though as they can only take passengers connecting to/from QF flights to/from Australia the 787 is probably bigger than they need for LAX-JFK.
