LAX departures [moved] to TBIT 1 Dec [*A FL access for WP]

The Star Alliance Lounge is very pleasant indeed :).

I was there a couple of days ago, and managed to nicely fill in a good deal of my 7-hour layover between my US domestic flight and VA24. The lounge is very spacious, with a variety of seating areas including the much-promoted outside terrace which looks over the airport towards the Hollywood Hills. It was very nice but no one was using it due to the rather chilly evening conditions in the US at the moment!

There's also a large balcony area outside the main part of the lounge overlooking the new shopping area in TBIT. There's also a media room with a (very) large screen TV showing mainly basketball by the looks of it.

There's also a luggage storage area as well. I don't drink alcohol, so can't help much with comments in that regard, but looked like there was a good range of drinks available (non-alcoholic as well of course). Two large tea/coffee stations, and two food stations, one with a selection of noodles and accompaniments and the other with chicken and pasta dishes, salads, fruit, a small range of desserts etc. Food was well presented and very tasty. A wide variety of reading material, but very little of it in English. Shower suites are quite pleasant - you need to ring a bell for an attendant to come and open one up for you - usual shower/toilet facilities, hairdryer etc. Water-saving showerheads, so not a lot of water pressure but at least the water was nice and warm (which is more than I can say for the experience in The Lounge at MEL domestic when I got back!), hairdryer available. Plays easy-listening "elevator music" in the shower room and bathrooms all the time, which tends to drive you up the wall a bit.

Excellent wifi signal, full strength inside the lounge, although had difficulty keeping a connection when sitting out on the balcony (then again, that might just be because of my coughpy old laptop). There are large screens displaying flight departures and staff regularly walk around with signs indicating flights which have started boarding (they also verbally announce the flight as well). The lounge started to fill up rapidly later in the evening with the advent of what looked like the entire St Kilda club, so at about 9.45pm I decided to take a walk around the duty free shops and then head down to the gate to stretch my legs before the flight (which now departs at 11.20pm).

The departure from TBIT wasn't as pleasant as the lounge stay though, I have to say. Didn't find anything of interest in the shops, to headed to the gate. Obviously a lot of the terminal is still under construction/renovation as there are a lot of boarded-up areas. We were at one of the furthest gates, so quite a walk, then a few minutes after I arrived, announcements were being made for VA24 passengers to make their way to security and to the gate ASAP as boarding would soon commence (this was just after 10pm, flight departure time scheduled for 11.20pm).

Then I found out why - priority boarding passengers were called up and we were then packed like sardines on to a bus and driven quite some distance to a far-flung part of LAX (have no idea where we actually were when we boarded), then had to walk up a huge concrete ramp on to the airbridge where we waited ... and waited ... and waited. Further busloads arrived so the airbridge was getting pretty crowded - and still we waited. Finally after about 15 minutes or so, we started to board. Took some time to get everyone on, then we taxiied back the way we'd come (and beyond) - about 6km in all according to the "point of origin" info and then into a queue where there was quite a wait again before it was our turn to take off. I know the departures from TBIT are only a recent development, but it seemed to be a rather "cobbled together" arrangement and quite a few passengers were not at all pleased with the process judging by overheard comments. I wasn't exactly thrilled myself, especially as I'd already had a long day's travelling and then waiting at LAX (and then had still yet another flight to PER after arriving in MEL), so it certainly wasn't an ideal experience - however being able to turn left when I got on the plane made up for it :).

Actually, regarding the much coveted Row 5, I glanced at the boarding pass of the woman standing next to me (not much else to do during that long wait on the airbridge) and she was in 5A, but no status of any kind indicated on the boarding pass and she certainly wasn't a celeb (we'd been chatting and she was an Aussie office worker from Melbourne) so would be interested to know how she scored a seat in that row - which was actually half empty, as was most of J - unless she asked for it at check-in and it was granted as the load in J was so light?

Thanks for the report.

(Oh No, the dreaded Bus Gates! Did that one for QF93 once - on a 388 to boot!)

I am in the star alliance lounge at TBIT with my family at the moment. Me (platinum) was offered first class lounge but decided to take business lounge with mrs (gold) and master. I did sneak a quick entry to the first class lounge to check it out, and check out the drink selections. I must say I was not impressed with the the first class lounge and retreated back to the business lounge with my family. I say not impressed, mainly because of the the lack of food selection, and only black label scotch.... The business class lounge has quite a few good breakout areas, and as I type this, mrs and master are the only ones out on the terrace taking in the night views. Amazing! Not very many people in the lounge at present (7pm LA time), but I suspect it will fill up before our BNE VA flight.

I know some people probably don't care but what's the view of the tarmac (if any) like?

Hard to believe that's at LAX! Looks awesome!
TBIT is very different now. When I arrived a few weeks ago, the arrivals 'walk' is above the main terminal, it's quite an impressive view down.

The last time I flew out of TBIT was before any of the renovations had opened (including this lounge) but I'm on a VA flight in a few weeks so i'll get to see it then :)

Re: LAX Loft Virgin Australia VA8

Although there will no longer be the convenience of transiting from T5-T3 without going through security a second time if connecting from Delta.

I flew Delta through LAX the other day. The VA shuttle bus was still operating from gate 52 or wherever it's always been, and still left every half hour on the half hour according to the Sky Club attendants. As I was on the Delta flight, I didn't experience it, though, but I assume it goes to TBIT now.

Re: LAX Loft Virgin Australia VA8

Have just returned from LAX on VA2 and have to say that the new *A lounge at LAX is probably the nicest lounge experience I've had in North America. The outside terrace is surprisingly peaceful (think traffic noise you'd expect at a LA hotel balcony rather than airport, and the waterfall sort of turns it into white noise). I was usually the only one out there. There were some neat little areas. The terrace is huge and each table has a nice little fire. There was a 'library room' quite area and a neat entertainment zone. Jurahn has provided enough detail. However, Jurahn didn't mention the Pho bar - which was a hit for me. I also enjoyed the newspapers from each of the Star Alliance member nations.

FWIW I'll probably give the First lounge a miss from now on. The alcohol was okay (though not a large step above what I saw in the rest of the lounge - as I was working I did appreciate the Badoit water though), and the food was exactly the same as available in the rest of the lounge (except it was 'made to order' fresh rather than buffet). A rather loud and obnoxious guest letting everyone know about his intolerant and rather bigoted political views probably didn't help, but the size of the lounge is quite small - and rather claustrophobic so even without that I would prefer the open spaces in the outside lounge.

I did have a weekend departure but the lounge most certainly wasn't crowded. In fact there were surprisingly few people in there. Definitely an upgrade from the old VX lounge (or the Skyclubs from the rest of my trip).

Found the same thing with the First lounge, The food was the same and like you mentioned, instead made to order. I just went out and got what I needed. It was quiet in there but I decided to hang outside as it felt like there was nothing really in the first lounge that made me feel like I had to stay there

Re: LAX Loft Virgin Australia VA8

Grubbidok - I followed you through 24 hours later!

Was very happy with the lounge - lots of different spaces although no real relax into them chairs! I resorted to the media room where the TV seemed fixed on football but the volume was right down and the chairs more comfortable for kicking back in.

Food selection was decent - mini wraps, chicken noodle soup, Caesar salad, a chicken dish, a pasta dish, cheese and crackers, brownies and a sponge cake and cream and strawberries. Also the usual nuts/ crackers etc.

Staff were very friendly and helpful.

Re: LAX Loft Virgin Australia VA8

Just as an aside, does anyone know if VA WP or SG get any form of priority entry into LAX with the new terminal? I wasn't given anything, and when I asked the VA check-in and the flight attendants the only answer was "no idea what happens at TBIT". This last trip had me waiting nearly 2hrs to get through customs. I know US customs is usually painful, but this was my worst for a while.

If you mean entry in to the country (similar to what we have in Australia with the Express passes), then no. I don't think there's anything set up for any airline elites. That said, when I arrived in to TBIT from BNE, it didn't take too long.

I arrived in LAX TBIT the other week and no special lines for status or J pax, It took around 30mins to clear. One thing I did notice is they were calling out for any passengers that had arrived on earlier flights and keeping a time sheet on how long they had been waiting and if they were still in line, calling them to the front of the line for processing.

On departure from TBIT, they have a seperate line for J/F and priority passengers, however this was a BIG mistake getting in that line, as it was slower than the normal line as operating crew would walk to the front along with assistance passengers..... next time I will use the normal line!!

Re: LAX Loft Virgin Australia VA8

I know getting through to a customs agency you're stuck with what you have. But what about the line up after collecting your luggage? I waited an hour and noticed a steady stream of people going through without a line, but didn't find where they were coming from.

Re: LAX Loft Virgin Australia VA8

Just booked a return flight to JFK for September and in the itinerary I received it's still showing the departure as being from T3 and not TBIT for VA2.

I realise that for the moment check-in is still at T3 but I was expecting by then check-in would have relocated. For me it shouldn't be a problem as I would expect to receive my BP at check-in at JFK and then use the airside shuttle to TBIT.

Was looking through the threads for info on lounges in LAX. A lot of older threads weren't complimentary but I found the good news in this one.

Am flying to LAX with VA in October and then on to YVR with Alaska. I'm a Gold - can I access this lounge on arrival even though I'm not proceeding on a VA/VX flight? Would be nice. Got a few hours to kill.

At least I know I can access it on my return from MCO a bit later.

Don't believe Alaska uses TBIT so doubt you will be able to go back one you clear immigration

No. Must be departing on a VA flight.
