After a disturbing thought crossed my mind on the weekend I raided the wife's purse and dragged out her QFF (Bronze) card. She had thoughtfully written her PIN on it so a few minutes later I breathed a sigh of relief after seeing the words :- Last point activity - Oct 2004

I almost panicked and transferred all her points to me, but then remembered the rules of Family Transfers - 5000 point minimum and only one per year. She is due to visit friends in Melbourne which could well happen in September or October. If I transfer the points now I will miss out on the 2000 points she would earn on a Syd/Mel return, and paltry as that sounds I may need every single point I can get for next September's COO.

These may be questions I have to direct at QF but does anyone here have an opinion about :-

  • The exact day on which points lapse (e.g. - is it 3 years to the day or just the end of the 36th month of no activity)?
  • Whether a Family Transfer is considered account activity, and if not - what happens to the QFF account? Is it emptied of points and cancelled (thus requiring another $82.50 to rejoin)?
  • What is the best way to earn a few points for nothing (excluding CC sign-ups which the missus hates with a passion)?
Cheers,

Andrew

The account is not cancelled... or at least it has not be when two of my children went passed 3 years.....and as I only ever redeemed flights for them over an extended period (that as I used to fly mainly Ansett!!!!!!!!!!!!!!) there were no paid ones on QANTAS....up until this year where they have had two sets of paid flights.

One is now 16.....and her previous paid flight was when she was 2.

TO answer your question based on experiences in the last year or so:

    • Can't answer as this has never happened to me. ;)

    • I believe it is considered activity[*]Deactivated accounts are emptied of points - there is no rejoining fee, the QFF account is simply reactivated with a zero point balance.

    • Transfer seems to do the trick ... Daughter had 3000 points soon to expire, points were transferred from her mother's account to bring it over 5000 points and then her entire balance was transferred to my account. Her last activity reset to that month the transfers were done.

My Qantas account has little activity (now mostly fly Star Alliance, never seem able to redeem flights with the points sitting inactive in the account).

I use ETrade for share trading- I don't trade that often but am pretty much guaranteed to record some activity in my Qantas FF account every couple of months (Last activity June, 11 points). I can basically forget about 3 year activity requirement.

A couple of cheap options to record activity -

* Take out a magazine subscription

* Buy a Qantas Club Diary. (2008 from mid-October)

- Both less than $50. Both will also prompt you to renew each year - you can forget about monitoring the date of your last activity

You could transfer a few of your own points to her, and then get them back again when you do the transfer to your account in October?
