oneworld® is to strengthen its position as the leading airline alliance serving Latin America with the addition of two more carriers in the region - LAN Argentina and LAN Ecuador.

The two newest carriers in the LAN alliance, the region's leading airline, will become affiliate members of oneworld as soon as the necessary joining technicalities can be completed. All parties have committed to ensure that this takes place as early as possible in 2007.

Both airlines will then offer oneworld's full range of services and benefits. This means their frequent flyers will be able to earn and redeem mileage awards on all other oneworld carriers with top-tier members able to gain access to the 400 airport lounges worldwide offered by the alliance's airlines. Members of other oneworld airlines will be able to earn and redeem awards and receive all other oneworld benefits on both LAN Argentina and LAN Ecuador. The two airlines' networks will also be covered by oneworld's extensive range of alliance fares. .......

Yay. Opens up a lot more of South America on a xONEx. Hopefully happens in time for booking my next trip there.

Good news. Gives a few more options for anyone wanting to bypass North America on a RTW.

I agree with Kiwi Flyer about opening up options in Sth America but not so sure about avoiding North America. AKL <> SCL is the only viable option to avoid the LOTFAP on a xONEx and the lack of L and D availability makes it a real bottleneck on a RTW.

I am still hoping that it would be possible although I haven't checked what availability is like on the South American routes.

It would be nice to visit some places in South America. I would prefer a LONE4 including SWP, South America, Europe and SE Asia.

SYD/AKL-SCL are notoriously difficult to get availability in first and business (paid other than full fare or award). Not sure about L class - may be easier.

AFAIK neither LAN Argentina nor LAN Ecuador have longhaul flights, and with the exception of Buenos Aires and Santiago (both already served by LAN) there aren't too many intercontinental flights from the airports they serve. So the addition of these two airlines will not improve options for avoiding USA. However, there are quite a few places in South America that these two airlines serve where LAN doesn't, thus more options to visit (including eg Iguazu if you want to see the falls).

Taking CX HKG-YVR also allows you to travel ATW and avoid the LOTFAP.

L class is no easier. I ditched a LONE4 in favour of a LGLOB34 as I simply couldn't get any L availability on AKL - SCL. Might have opened up closer to the date but I wasn't willing to take the chance and went AKL -PPT -IPC - SCL on TN and LA instead.

My explanation was probably very poor. I want to avoid North America on a RTW but at the same time while routing through South America to have a decent choice of places to visit. I haven't done much research but felt that the addition of these 2 airlines would open more options. If this will not be possible because of lack of L class availability then plans can be altered.

Thanks. I had not even thought of that option. If the South American option is not feasible then this is a better alternative.

I guess I will probably visit the US several times in the future but the more stories I hear after people visit the places the less I am interested in the going. Apart from the fingerprinting my friend and his wife were asked to take off their shoes and socks and put into a room where they were blasted with high powered air. They were totally shocked and scared as nothing was explained to them beforehand. This is how tourists are treated? No thanks!

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

I had the 'pleasure' of the bomb sniff booth last trip through PHX. The TSA rep did actually explain what was going to happen - though 'puffs of air' was an understatement - more like hairdyer set on 'cold stun' :) For the unaware I can imagine it would be rather terifying, esp. if one was wearing a kilt.

Methinks that the LOTFAP is becoming more the LOTSAP. Definition is left as an excersise for the reader. (hint - think isolationist)

We are doing this route as well but on purpose as we want to go to Tahiti. It sure would make life easier for us Aussies if TN would join OW too!
