This sounds like an oxymoron - Japan and Milk, but I am asking for Miss Here2go (2yo), who loves milk, but is lactose intolerant. Does anybody know whether there is a brand of lactose free milk that can be purchased in Japan (specifically in Tokyo and Kutchan/Niseko, or a powder that we can take with us in January.

Failing that - what is Japanese for Soymilk?

Cheers!

I don't know of any, and haven't seen any there. I'd be scouring the local shops for powder.
Have you considered sourcing lactase and de-lactosing it yourself?

Not an oxymoron at all! Milk is huge in Japan. No trip to an onsen is complete without a jar of milk to refresh yourself afterwards, and the cows in Hokkaido produce super tasty milk.

Anyway, Accadi is a lactose free option. You can see a picture in the link provided. There is a fact sheet about lactose and Accadi here which talks about the benefits of Accadi.

There are a couple of others around but this is the only one I've tried.

Japanese for soymilk is 豆乳. Written in latin alphabet it would be toonyuu or tounyuu. :)

I just wanted to say - I love this forum! Thank you all who read and could assist!

@Wingspan, I am looking forward to procuring Accadi in Roppongi, Tokyo and also in the Seico Mart / Lawson's Station in Niseko Grand Hirafu in the next few days. I have printed off your link and added it to my paper file of important stuff.

Hope you all have a great time here2go! I'm heading to Japan in a week and a half myself and can almost taste all the good sushi now. Enjoy!

Wingspan, we couldn't get Accadi at Family Mart in Roppongi, or in Niseko at SeicoMart or Lawson's Station. We decided to see how things went and get soy if needed. We found Japanese milk has a low lactose content, tasting different to Australian milk. I liked it, Miss Here2go drank it, and Mrs Here2go was not impressed. I reckon it tasted grassy, but that's not a bad thing. No lactose problems. Get to Singapore on the way home, and we gave ordinary milk to Miss Here2go, and the "fun" started. Luckily we found lactose free in the fridges, and it was all good.

There is something special about the milk from Hokkaido.
