Lack of middle name.

I've got a similar scenario that I've been given conflicting info on. Booked MEL>KL for June with Qantas points via Malaysian Air. The booking has neither mine or my wifes middle names, but first + last name is spot on.

Qantas advised they couldn't change it due to being a classic rewards booking, and that it might flag an issue with MAS. Called MAS, they told me as long as first + last names match, then it's all good. Also asked their online chat, and they told me the middle name has to be on the booking. Confused. Most info I've seen seems to tell me we'll be fine and that it's a non-issue.

Call centre agents and bots (chat) will usually parrot the official line which is that names must match exactly the passport.

However, in reality that’s not really the case.

It’s quite often that middle names don’t appear, or there are multiple middle names some of which don’t appear, or there are middle names which are truncated. Or even names incorrectly spelled.

What’s important is when the passport is scanned which then transmits the full information to the arrival authorities. As long as the check-in agent can match the name on the ticket with the person standing in front of them you’ll be fine.

Middle names are not, generally, that important to establishing the identity.

The exception to this sometimes is low-cost carriers where they will insist on a middle name being on the ticket which no doubt helps them in circumstances where a flight is overbooked and they can deny you boarding on the basis that your ticket doesn’t exactly match the passport. But for legacy carriers it’s rarely a problem.

At least half of my tickets don’t even have my full first name on them let alone the middle name!

I never travel international with my middle name on the ticket, haven't had an issue. As MEL_Traveller says, the full name is transmitted to authorities with passport data

Spare a thought for those with only one name or multiple middle names
IT makes assumptions including that some only have first and sur names
